The Democrats in the Assembly are afraid a tax increase will shorten their careers so they are trying to hike "hidden taxes" as an alternative instead of doing the sensible thing and cut expenses (aka waste).

A Democrat has never met a tax hike they didn't want to adopt. As far as I'm concerned, the people of New Jersey got just the government they deserve.

Unfortunately, this will go through. Of the taxes, a sales tax is the least destructive.

The dummies in PA bought Rendell's line on property taxes, too and they're going to reward him for his duplicity.

Question: When will the voters of NJ get a clue that when they vote for a liberal Dem, they will get higher taxes?
Answer: When Hell freezes over.
They get what they voted for. I have no sympathy.

Corzine is planning to shut down the government but will pay all state workers their full salary without regard to whether they work or not.

Last few years they've added about 50,000 state workers.
You can be sure all those folks are happy they voted for the dem.

instead of doing the sensible thing and cut expenses (aka waste). Strange, that sensible option seems to be missing from Corzine's and the Democrats in the Assembly's plan even though their Constitution requires a balanced budget. That sure does support the phrase "tax and spend liberal."

"Corzine has proposed boosting the sales tax from six percent to seven percent to help close a projected four-point-five (b) billion budget deficit."
NJ already has the highest taxes in the nation. How could it possibly have a $4.5 billion deficit? It must be a misprint.

I live in the center of New Jersey -- total Republican area. Democrats don't even run at the municipal level. Last November in my town we voted 2 to 1 for the GOP dude for governor, Doug Forrester. It's all the idiots along the Hudson and across from Philly who screw up our state.
Now, that said, New Jersey is a small state. I can be in PA in a half hour. Say after this sales tax goes through, I'm looking at $2500 plasma screen TVs. By driving a half hour into PA (which has a lower sales tax for now), I can give myself an instant $25 discount. Will I do it? Absolutely! Stupid Corzine wanted an extra $25 on my TV. Instead he lost a total of $175 in sales tax. IDIOT. IDIOT. IDIOT.

Money = Power
More Taxes = More Power
If the government taxes the economy to the point where they are the only ones left with money, then they have more power still.
