It was the anniversary of the beginning of the Korean War. And they have had rallies this large in the past. But they don't have them every anniversary. And I'm not exactly sure how common a rally this size would be (how many of these there have been the past few years? a handful? several? or just a few?)

In any case, the timing is noteworthy.

Given that half the country has to eat grass to stay alive, they should be really thankful that they live in a communist country.

Hundreds of thousands of North Koreans staged a massive anti-U.S. rally in Pyongyang on Sunday, the North's state media reported, as regional tension has risen over the communist state's reported plan to launch a long-range missile.

Pyongyang's Kim Il-sung Square "shook with their voices denouncing the U.S. imperialists, the sworn enemy of the Korean people," the (North) Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) said in an article.

Reports of promised food handouts later remain unproven.

He should bring Cindy Sheehan with him.

I'm sure they'd give her a spot on the podium as well.

"Human wave = 'weapon'"

If you go back over their media drivel over the past decade or so, you'll see that they advocated the concept of "human bombs" long before there was ever such a phenomena as suicide bombing (over ten years ago).

They are fanatical, tragically brainwashed, and therefore highly dangerous.

A "war dance" prior to an attack?

I know the analogy is rather simplistic, but this could be a 21st century version.

"A "war dance" prior to an attack?"

That's why I wonder how often these occur (I know they do, but it is not every other weekend).

Totalitarian societies (and they are the most totalitarian of any nation on earth . . .truly Orwellian) control their people through agitprop (agitation and propaganda). So when they start firing them up, there is usually a reason. (Maybe just for show. Maybe not.)

If I were in the White House, I'd think fairly seriously about droping a missile with about 50lbs of explosive in the middle of the biggest fountain in Pyongyang.

Then, in a speech before the UN have Bolton declare that "we have substantially upgraded versions of that warhead and if Kim Jong Il wants to continue his level of war retoric, we will demonstrate them forthwith"!!

My guess the Kim Il regime would fold in a week.

Perhaps we should simultaneously drop a 2000 pounder on the Taepodong-2 launch site. Just in case he doesn't fold.
