I will attempt to answer some of your questions although it seems you already have the answers you want.

The glass in the Hummers is not bullet proof, particularly against large caliber weapons.

One of the vehicles (squads) likely stayed at the road block because a position cant be abandoned even in the fact of the enemy wanting you to chase him.

I realize that the good news of killing zarqawi is bad news for the wacked out media and their allies, but I guess it's something they are going to have to live with.
