Kind of a "silver lining" story.

Looks like things may be turning around for the better down south.

Anything that deters Chavez should be a good thing.

well wait and see where the n. sol is trading in a few years. Wasn't garcia the one who oversaw the mind-boggling inflation some time back?

The way our hateful liberal media was spinning the Peru elections last night you would think that the anti-US left wing socialist won the elections in Peru, where in reality it is the opposite. They simply cannot get or say it right these morons, can they?

Could be. But better that than Chavez' craziness. I'm convinced he's behind all the trouble we're having in Nuevo Laredo, even if it's indirectly...

Alan garcia was president of peru from 85-90. the currency info is from wikipedia...in spending power i think this is probably more like a 99.9999% loss of buying power of the 1985 currency rather than the implied 99.9999999%. the guy is an economic basket case.

Peru
Peru went through the worst inflation from 1984 to 1990. The highest denomination in 1984 was 50,000 soles de oro. By 1985, it was 500,000 soles de oro. In the 1985 currency reform, 1 intis was exchanged for 1000 soles de oro. In 1986, the highest denomination was 1,000 intis. It was 5,000,000 intis by 1990. In the 1991 currency reform, 1 nuevo sol was exchanged for 1,000,000 intis. The overall impact of hyperinflation: 1 nuevo sol = 1,000,000,000 pre 1985 soles de oro.

LIMA, PERU – Peruvian voters elected leftist leader Alan García to a five-year term on Sunday, returning the former president to office 16 years after his first stint.

My how things have changed when a leftist leader gets elected, and it's a good thing.

That's mind boggling. It reminds me of a poster I read long ago who could 'prove' that currency is unconstitutional.

a better one is argentina up until the introduction of the dollar-pegged peso (no longer pegged). I did the calc., and it was something like 10 trillion 1970 pesos to 1 new one, with several currency changes over the years.

" several currency changes over the years "

Changes in the pockets where it lives, too, I'd bet...

So he is a leftist leader. Why was crazy Chavez against him? I am confused on this one.

Mr. García said the result is "a defeat for the expansionist efforts of [Mr. Chávez]. Peru's democracy said 'no' to him."

Surprising that even the winner would give Chavez credit for the result. Chavez must really have PO'ed the Peruvians.

He's free market left. He's not a Chavez puppet. Much more along the lines of the Chilean or Brazilian government, which is to say more the Scandinavian model than the Soviet model of Socialism which Chavez subscribes to.

Two leftists were running. One was a Chavez clone and the other was a Lula clone.

The Lula clone got elected.
