So you work and walk around with a mask all of the time?

Disabled? You’re kidding. When I hear the word “disabled”

Perfume and most scents are a migraine trigger to me. Since it can knock me out for more than a day, and make it such that I absolutely cannot function, yes, I would call it disabling. Thank god for Imitrex, or else I would become violent.

Interestingly enough, gasoline, cigarette smoke, bleach, etc doesn't bother me, but I have had an asthma attack from a blanket once (after using a scented fabric sheet).

I don't have to wear it all the time, but in some locations, like with a new paint or carpet, or scented candles, or cleaning products, or whatever it is in Home Depot in the wood section that bothers me, or in a room with bad ventillation when everybody is freshly groomed, I will trigger an asthma attack. So I carry them in my purse.

I don't have regular allergies of much note exept for penicillin and sulfa. But lately the chemical triggered asthma has gotten bad.

If I get too many triggers in a short period, then my lungs get inflamed and I have to take flovent. So my goal is to minimize getting triggered. The meds to fix it bother my digestive track.

Can't win for losing...

Sounds terrible. Unfortunately, I would find it difficult to wear a mask to work.

I still feel stupid doing it. Never had asthma as a kid. Have to get it when I'm grandmotherly in age...

I'm not sure what my trigger is. (Of course, I won't wish migranes even on this journalist.) I used to think it was food. However, over time, the record didn't bear this out.

Now I think it may be a combination of weather and food. I think the weather brings in "foreign" pollen (from about 500 miles) and that may cause a problem. I had two bosses who also had headache (migrane and cluster); they would get the headaches the same days that I did. One used Imitrex, I used Tylenol3 and I don't know what the other used.)

I did read every issure of the "Journal of Headache and Pain" for the first few years it was printed. I now know that the medical establishement officially doesn't know any more than I do about the causes. Each individual has a separate trigger.

They need to be locked in a non-airconditioned room with the Aussie cricket team after a hard day in the field (or perhaps that should be the English cricket team).

Just wait until they get around to flatulence.

Seems many of us said this could be soon coming and were scoffed at.

"have to wear n95 and r95 masks for chemically triggered asthma sometimes because of those scents, but I'm not asking for people to give them up...but if I hadn't discovered masking, I don't know what I would have done."

I am sorry for your situation and glad you don't expect people to give up scent. To me perfume and scent is one of the best pleasures of life. For ANYONE to expect and demand that this pleasure be given up because of their health problem, which is their problem, well I am sorry but they can just gasp, and then stuff it in their ear.

I'm in exactly the same situation, but I didn't know about those masks. I am not able to afford medical help and have been having to live with this for over 2 years.

Oh, dear, I wrote a way-too-long reply, so I will send it to you in FReepmail. Sorry, this topic is my main worry these days and I got long-winded (I wish!).

You realize that you've just bought yourself some very bad juju, don't you? Wishing death on someone else is sick and will rebound on you.

No, Jane, you ignorant journalist. I've watched it happen more than once. Mostly they just collapse. (Whether this requores banning scents is another question.) Perhaps a little medical research at an allergists office would have been helpful before having your name forever attached to this editorial.

Jane?

Who's Jane?

And Toronto has banned consumer-use insecticides and herbicides. You can't spray for weeds or bugs on your own property there. The Univeristy of Toronto actually has landscaping that's all weeds, I mean, all natural, right down to the throat slashing 6' thistles.

Church is one of the places I have the most problems, also. So I sit on a bench at the very back which is about six feet away from everyone else. I don't really like it, as I'd rather sit in with everyone else, but at least it enables me to be there.
