You wouldn't let a pervert or pedophile enter your home or speak on the phone with your child, would you? So why on earth are you letting your kids hang out with them online? Too many parents would rather have their kids like them than worry about their safety.

Anyone who does not understand the potential dangers their children face on the internet is insane.

Sounds like this writer has a smart girl for a daughter. The truth is if kids want to be on that site, they'll find a way to do it.

Another dateline induced panic. Did you know that if you back myspace into the garage door it could explode due to faulty engineering?

Of course kids will find a way onto MySpace if they want to, but that doesn't mean that parents should stand by and do nothing.

You know, I remember when I was a kid. I would be out playing with my friends and getting in what my parents thought was trouble. Now and then I would fight with other kids, sometimes someone would get hurt. But in the end, we were a hell of a lot less danger than the average kid is today.

Some crimes and criminals have been stopped because kids know what to look out for and notify the authorities accordingly.

my step monster's granddaughter is 15 and she and all her friends have profiles on myspace and they all post provocative, suggestive slutty photos of themselves and vulgar descriptions of themselves that would scare the crap out of you. if their parents are aware and approve, we're f'd as a nation...how I busted her is too long a scary step monster story.

McKai has many "friends" who have posted messages and pictures. One is from a girl named Jess who writes: "hey love! i'm live on my web cam right NOW!! come play with me!!!" Then she lists a porn site that, she notes, is "free for myspace members!" Ten to one that "Jess" is a 40-year old male.

But in the end, we were a hell of a lot less danger than the average kid is today. You may think so, but it's mostly a case of constantly being exposed to over-hyped 24-hour news that you would not have heard about when you were younger. I don't think the crime statistics show that children are actually in more danger nowadays regardless of what people's perceptions are.

Honest.

Most of the "garbage" on MySpace is spoof produced by girlfriendless 20-something males, greatly entertaining themselves by how society pretends to be so shocked over what every person knows and thinks about privately.
The rest of the crazies are terminal head cases who went bad many years ago, long before the internet. Their presence on the web is the least of their problems, and in any case has no relation to the internet itself.

And you never would have known about the activity if not for myspace. You've just recieved a window into how teenagers act and a very effective tool for monitoring it.
As for the pedophiles, they are not your biggest worry. Your biggest worry is still and has always been hormone crazed teenage boys in her school and in nearby schools. And now you have a list of all of them.
And when one of them comes over to take her out and starts the "how are you, sir or ma'am" eddie haskel routine, you can check his myspace to see if it's legit.

MySpace's lack of controls and the obvious spammers and trolls who have latched onto the site, will kill it rather quickly. Expect some other site to be hot in a year or two.
That said, a guy I know hopes to make it big with his own take on letting parents supervise their kids via Online Chaperone, which logs and watches for suspicious chat traffic.
I asked him what happens though, when the kids figure out how to un-install it :-) ... his point was, if your kids have admin rights on your copy of WinXP to begin with, they can disable any other program too ...
