A case of beer, a Wal-Mart raft, and mountain river rapids. What could go wrong?

In this case I doubt it matters where the raft was purchased. As a matter of fact I believe its irrelevant to the story. The writer of the story seems to just want to use the incident as an opportunity to take a cheap shot at Wal-Mart.

I've done my share of river rafting as a guide and as an instructor. Those light PVC rafts fron Wal-Mart, et. al. are possibly - and I'm being generous here - suitable for a glass-smooth lake that is shallow enough to stand in when it springs a leak or otherwise dumps you in the water. Also, they typically aren't rigid enough to provide support if you need to torque hard on the paddles (or oars) to accelerate, slow down or turn rapidly.
Even though class 3 rapids aren't generally exceedingly complex, in this kind of raft the are equivalent to class 6 (impassable) in a "real" river raft.

19 and 20 yo? A case of beer should be just a warmup when you're that age.
A warmup for some real stupidity!

The adventure is nothing new to Williams, who said he also seeks thrills skateboarding, snowboarding and bungee jumping. I'll keep an eye out at Wal-Mart for the guy with 200 bungee cords in his cart.

I wonder if this would have been a K-Mart or Target raft if it would have made the news that it was bought at one of those two places? Sounds like the media's attempt to blame Wal-Mart sort of like they blame SUV's for accidents instead of the drivers.
But none the less it gives the Wal Mart bashers on here a chance to bash Wal-Mart again. It happens at least once a day here on FR. BTW, was the raft made in China?

If any one of these dopes would have drowned... I'm sure their survivors would have sued Wal-Mart for selling "defective" rafts.
For some reason, the silk pony (aka former V-P candidate John Edwards) comes to mind with regard to this issue.

Wasn't there a song that went something like this;
You don't tug on Superman's cape
You don't spit into the wind
You don't pull the mask off the ole Lone Ranger
And you don't do a class III river on a Chinese raft.
Da da da do do do do do

The more cases you drink, the smaller it gets.
