We the people need to take back the control of the purse strings How, exactly, do you propose "we the people" do that?
90% of our elected officials can't / refuse to remember what "we the people" stands for.
That is all too evident by what "my side" is saying and doing on this issue.
I think the Democrats are going to make huge gains in the next election. Possibly retake one of legislative bodies. If they don't, they will be close - for the next election.
And who are the illegals going to vote for?
That is what really amazes me - the Republicans really do think they are going to get some of this voting block. Right.
Roll the tape forward - now the Rat / Lib crowd controlls at least one elective body, probably more.
Are "we the people" any closer to controlling those purse strings?
It's long past time that the rare and elusive species, "The Honest Politician", be put on the endangered species list.
We've slid so far down the slope now, the top is no longer in sight.
I remember reading an article several years ago, wish I would have saved it, that said this is it for the Republican Party. After GWB things will revert to Rat controll, and stay there. The main reason, as I remember, was the inability of the conservatives to overcome the "we will give you everything" social welfare of the Rat party.
How does that saying go, once the people realize that they can control (thru voting for the Rat party) the purse strings - it's all over.

We are no longer a nation with a leadership which believes in the rule of law. Plan accordingly. That became apparent to me just over a year ago; this nation's "leadership" has not altered my opinion of them except to cement my year-old belief.

Please, guys, do your jobs. Forget about immigration reform until the borders are secure. If and when you manage that one, we can talk about the rest. Actually, if you can manage that one, we won't need to talk about the rest. Secure the border and enforce existing law and the problem will resolve itself over time without the need for "comprehensive" anything. Who are you talking to?

Well he would if he found it in Scotch law. Fat Boy Kennedy finds things in Scotch law. Arlen finds things in Scottish law.

Although it is doubtful that I could afford one of your homes, and I don't even want to live in a gated community, please accept my appreciation for not hiring an illegal alien.
We outlawed slavery in the USA about 150 years ago.
It took another 100 years to legislate equal civil rights.
I will never applaud those who support creating a tiered system of low wage earning, imported "guest workers"(indentured servants), or introducing the ancient and immoral "caste" system into the USA.
Employers who can't get a free citizen of the USA to work for the wage, and under conditions, as offered, has to make business choices reflecting the reallity of the free market, and within the rule of law.
Secure the borders, and start jailing the CEOs of companies who break the labor laws, and the problem is solved.
Tyson is one of the bigger companies who need to be prosecuted.
There are many others, but I prefer we start enforcing the laws ALREADY IN PLACE that regulate the labor market, before we legislate slavery into existence in the USA again.
Because if the politicians keep this crap up, not only will I start supporting the existing labor unions, I will volunteer my spare time and energies to creating new and improved high tech versions!
If ignoring the fluctuating labor cost element of capitolism is the new legislative socialist intent, pardon me while I join the revolution against the anti-capitolist socialist legislature.

Very well stated. I have turned in a few businesses that hire many illegals, and all I got for my effort was
1) admonishment from the INS
2) One death threat from an employer I turned in(the INS must have ratted my name to the employer).

Can't control the purse strings via voting...soon they won't need your vote only your tax $$ b/c soon the minority will be paying all the taxes (the top 50% pay 96% of all income taxes now) and the majority will be getting handouts. Entitlement spending 2006 is 60% of the US budget--there isn't a Congressperson who is going to touch it and as long as the dough keeps rolling in they will continue to vote buy with it.
I propose HR 25, S 25 The FairTax bill...one step at a time and the first step needs to be to make all taxes visible and controlled by the people--put a strangle hold on the money flowing to the Congresscritters and then reign in spending by not allowing the amount to be raised.
Republics demand responsibility and morality not only from the elected officials, but from the People as well. Sadly, the more the government hands out 'entitlements' the more apathetic the people become and both fail to fulfill the responsibilities required of a Republic.

Judaical review was the beginning of the end.Judicial review was established in 1803. That's some ending -- 203 years and counting. Do you know the official Year of Doom when the country will officially die? Will that be another 203 years, or is the apocalypse just about upon us?
