What we should do is to come up with econo-ways.

Limited access coast-to-coast transportation arteries, with the individual speed limit set at the mileage / gallon of the vehicle you're driving. Minimum 50 mpg.

Driving a huge 12-mpg truck? Sorry dude, back to the regular highway for you.

On a 100 mgp small efficient speedy something or other? Welcome to the future. Have at it.

:)

If you mandate 55 again, you'll just have a nation of lawbreakers. But Hildebeast just loves the thought of ruling the masses...

The liberals push for a 55 mile an hour speed limit is about raising speeding ticket revenue, not about gas consumption. There are better ways to reduce fuel consumption.

And why 55? Why not 40?!

40's supposedly the optimal speed +/- for most cars.

How 'bout some mandatory limits for Congressmen.

I recently took a trip from North Alabama to Gatlinburg, Tn.

I drove in the 70-74 mph range.

I got over 40 mpg in a 13 year-old 4-door Honda.

I don't need Hillary Clinton adding an extra hour of driving time on my vacation trips to the mountains FOR NO REASON. My vehicle would have gotten the same mileage at 55 that it would have at 70.

I say one word concerning a return of the 55 mph speed limit. Bull$h!t ! Also, hell no !!!!!

I just did a trip from Colorado to Indiana/Ohio last weekend to go to the Dayton Hamfest and drop my Jeep off for the Summer since I will be there quite a bit this coming Summer. I drove mostly at 80 mph for almost the whole trip. If the limit was 55 mph, this would basically be called reckless driving even though it is a reasonable speed.

Is this from Scrappleface? 55 is the lower limit already. You have to do 75 to 95 on the on-ramp just to merge safely.

55, yeah that'll work. When the national limit was 55 in the 70s and 80s anyone who actually drove 55 on a freeway was cringing behind the wheel in fear because of the 70mph+ traffic streaming by him on both sides.

I think the local cops in the metro Atlanta area have given up even trying to enforce speed limits. I haven't seen a blue light flashing behind a pulled over car on the I-285 perimeter or I-75 north of the perimeter in a long time. I don't think the entire GA national guard could enforce the speed limit around Atlanta if every guardsman had his own cruiser with a chain gun mounted on the hood.

Say it isn't so Doc! I'm actually agreeing with Hillary for I think the first time ever. I was against it when the speed limits were raised back up. I'm perfectly comfortable driving at sub-60 speeds. No doubt Hottieboy will instantly attribute this to the same type of brain damage that leads one to buying a Harley.

Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton called for "most of the country" to return to a speed limit of 55 mph in an effort to slash fuel consumption

I Can't Drive, I'm 65

One foot in the grave, and one on the gas - Hey!

Well I’m blocking traffic, they can’t pass, no!

So I made a quick illegal turn and I left that doggone blinker on again

You know I got my license back in ‘45

Most of my friends are barely alive

I take these pills just to survive

I can’t drive, I’m 65!

So I’m tooling right along in my huffmobile

And I can’t see over the steering wheel, no

I take a stop sign out and a mailbox too

At the rail road crossing I drive right through

They say “Whoa”!

I don’t go faster than 25

Card in my wallet says you shouldn’t revive

Flunked my eyetest I have them a bribe I can’t drive, I’m 65!

Hillary: "We're going to take things away from you"
by Beth Fouhy, Associated Press
June 29, 2004

Headlining an appearance with other Democratic women senators on behalf of Sen. Barbara Boxer, who is up for re-election this year, Hillary Clinton told several hundred supporters -- some of whom had ponied up as much as $10,000 to attend -- to expect to lose some of the tax cuts passed by President Bush if Democrats win the White House and control of Congress.

"Many of you are well enough off that ... the tax cuts may have helped you," Sen. Clinton said.

"We're saying that for America to get back on track, we're probably going to cut that short and not give it to you.

We're going to take things away from you on behalf of the common good."

Hillary is such a she-queen! If she has her way, going through New Mexico again will take me forever and a day (and I would be doing 65).

I hope she really makes this part of her campaign; she'll lose sooooooooooo bad in 2008!

Great idea Hil! Remember how gas prices plummeted when we tried this before? No, wait...they didn't.
Remember, then, the millions of lives that were saved by the reduction in highway speed? No, wait...people continued to die in car crashes.
Okay, then, remember how car insurance rates dropped? Oops, no...they continued to rise.
Umm...what is your reasoning for this again, Hil?

"And wherever it can be required, and the people will forced under threat of violence to accept it, we ought to do it," Clinton said at the National Press Club."

Fixed.
