Also, it couldn't hurt to get a PPV vaccine--- for pneumonia. It's generally about $5-$10 at a health clinic or easy enough to get at your doctors office.
Part of the reason would be massive amounts of people not able to go to work. Two-fold reasoning- can't do jobs that need doing to keep "grid" running, and second, strain of people at home consuming things in higher numbers... like internet. There is a possibility this could be as serious as the 1918 pandemic. Although we have more technology and knowledge about things like hygiene and sanitation, we also are more densely packed in cities than they were back then.
Even though I live in Florida- on 9/11 I went to the grocery store in the early afternoon- we still didn't know how bad it might get- and stocked up on enough for 10 days. Of course I do that now every June, given the hurricanes we've had:) Staying prepared without being paranoid seems wise.
Gotta have candy ready at all times!
"I heard a radio news report tonight that said that the indonesian outbreak "responded to Tammiflu".
The response was rigor mortis.
Same here. I live in Mobile.
I have continuously tinkerd with and up-dated my hurricane preparation so that now I'm at a 'stand-alone' point. I don't need anything from outside for a very long time, maybe a year or so but, becoming less and less comfortable as time passes.
On Niman's website he says that actually another person in the cluster died but WHO didn't get to test her, so she's not counted among those who died of H5N1. In fact, the number of dead (in general) is pretty conservative since they only count ones they actually tested; some weren't tested since they weren't around birds (during last year or so) or the victims died and were buried or disposed of before WHO got to them. And then there's China.
* New researches from the Gadjah Mada University have shown that rats and flies could become a carrier for the avian flu virus. Work on pest control.
I've wondered about mosquitos. Anyone have an input?
Rats and flies? Blood borne? I'll check out that website.
Preparing for bird flu website... that is the name... cuz it comes up not the name. Is there a link, please! Thanks!

A little late reading this thread. Totally agree with your statement,
"The stated level of infection is out of line with the government reaction. Romania has had multiple H5N1 outbreaks among birds during the last 12 months, with nothing like this in response. I wonder what is different this time"
Wonder if this is the type of thing to expect more of if the progression continues, which seems like it will.
