This is the best piece I've seen that makes it clear we are being hustled by our wonderful Congress. The CIC is complicit. They're all really ducking the BORDER CONTROL issue. That's the reality, whether we face it or not.

Magnificent sense by Thomas Sowell.

The Senate and Bush will ignore it, as usual.

The claim that the two pieces of legislation must be passed at the same time has been repeated endlessly. But endless repetition is not a coherent argument.

The Simpson Mizzoli bill that passed in 1986 was just such a piece of "comprehensive legislation." The government chose to ignore the enforcement provisions of the law. Thus to accept ANOTHER piece of "comprehensive legislation" is an act of foolishness.

The principal reason for separating enforcement and border security from the "comprehensive legislation" and demanding that they be accomplished first, is that without that leverage, enforcement and border security will be ignored again.

I do the same, and have yet to get a reply other than the standard "Form" letter.

A realistic assessment of the whole mess. Dr. Sowell is way out in front of most of the politicians on the hill. Looks like yesterdays combatants ran out of ammo. :-)

Yeah, I saw the Admin Moderator come in with threats of "vacations." I guess that took the wind out of a few sails.

""As for not being able to pass immigration legislation separately, that claim has already been refuted by those who made it. The Senate has just passed a bill allowing illegal aliens to collect Social Security, even if they were hired with forged or stolen Social Security cards.""

And we need illegal immigrants to come here because??

Sowell cuts the Gordian Knot, as usual. "Oh, we can't enforce the law against 10 million scoflaws," is a red herring which has nothing to do with the actual issue.

The actual issue is whether the immigration quotas make sense, and if they do whether people who fit the (poor, nonwhite) Democratic demographic actually should be preferred over people who fit the rich middle class Republican demographic.

Put me on it if you will.

Dr. Sowell makes more sense than just about anybody else. And that includes the President and most of the Republicans in the Senate.
