I was in Durham for a while, I don't remember anything like this. There was however a pub called the Dun Cow, which had the infamous, "Dun Cow Challenge," which involved drinking ten pints in 2 hours. Does that count as a cult?

Many years ago I was a war gamer. Some of the shows, conventions, get togethers, etc brought people from all types backgrounds including a heavy role-playing contengent.
They always kind of creeped me out, too.
