>>>>Theodore Roosevelt put it best: "In the first place, we should insist that if the immigrant who comes here in good faith becomes an American and assimilates himself to us, he shall be treated on an exact equality with everyone else, for it is an outrage to discriminate against such men because of creed or birthplace origin. But this is predicated upon the person's becoming in every facet an American and nothing but an American."

Time to stop putting up with all the "racist" accusations when it really isn't about race at all but politics.

Opposition to English as the official language of the United states only demonstrates the need for it to become the official language of the United States.

The first thing that comes out of a Democrat is the word "racist"

It's about perpetrating a talking point distracting the "base" from the larger agenda.
Worked on the media, not the base.

There is no need to "make" English our national language. English already is our national language.

Yes I know. The official language of British Guyana, that has a population of mostly black and/or indian is English.

Having an official language is a sound idea. I believe that the reason dems are against English as the official language is solely to maintain a lower class, thus dem voters. If a person possesses poor language skills they will be less likely to get a well paying job. More people with low wages equals disgruntled voters with class envy. This group is typically the dem demographic.

Agree with your post #11. In addition, the Dems don't want to offend those of their potential new constituents who choose not to learn English. The perverse Dems want to ensure that fluency in English not be a requisite to success.

At the risk of sounding racist, I'd say American English is perhaps the best language available: more flexible phonetically and structurally, it allows for broader thought due its expanding complexity.

Where in the Constitution does it give the federal government the right to create a national language? Is their anyone left who doesn't want to shred the Constitution anymore?

Article 1, section 8 says:
To establish an uniform Rule of Naturalization...
Congress has the power to make English the official language for naturalization purposes. Which basically makes Engish, the official language of the USA. I see no Constitutional problem arising from such legislation.

And English for everyone prevents Balkanization of our country. We all have to speak the same language or eventually we will have the Polish enclave, the French section, the German area and the Spanish speaking bunch. And of course the Italian section. You think Congress is a mess now?
