"You are the child or spouse (including a divorced spouse) of a worker (living or deceased) who has worked long enough under Social Security or in a Medicare-covered government job."

Where does it say that? My MIL is 61, but her husband is 78, retired, and on Social Security. She is paying $300.00/month for private insurance. Nobody has ever told her (or me) how she could qualify for Medicare before Age 65 unless her kidneys fail or she gets ALS.

The sentence quoted at top does not appear on any Federal Web Site, except in SSA Publication No. 05-10043, January 2006, ICN 460000, where it says you must be 65 and the spouse of a worker with enough Social Security credit.

".. Ph.D.s in science or math should .." ...."..Americans CAN'T do..."

Not can't ! Won't do !
It takes too much time from watching MTV, chillin out, hot dates, hyper-active social lives, video games & IMing friends to get a PhD in math & science.
Life in a mud hut or seeing the back end of a water buffalo can sometimes be a powerful motivator.

Anyone who's 55 or younger, has worked for a living and is counting on a retirement that's as generously "funded" by the Federal government as was their parents' is in for a very rude awakening in about 10-15 years.

What's scary is what happens just before it goes belly up? With pending deficits say in the 10-trillion mark, where will future politicians who just want to pass the crisis along to the next ones look for temporary funds? Where can those kind of funds be found? Why, let's look right over here! All of these "rich" fat-cat Republicans have been saving in tax-advantaged 401K and IRA's, while they ignored this crisis when they were in power, added to it with the Senior Prescription Plan, included Illegal Aliens to the mix.

So, why not have a "one-time" tax on this all of this selfish wealth? No one should enjoy retirement more than all of us collectively!

Can you hear them?

In nineteen years at the Fed, he never noticed this before?

Sounds to me like it's just one more incredibly obvious fact he is trying to avoid responsibility for.
