It seems to me that at first, in order to get their hands on power, they are very left wing because they want revolution. Then once they get power, they become very right wing so they can hang on to power. Protests are strickly verbotten unless it is organized by by the gov't. They are not motivated by the desire for reform as much as they are motivated by the desire for power and the raw muscle that comes with it.

I'm just amazed a CFR-type has either put 2 and 2 together, or otherwise admitted, that the "end of the Cold War" paved the way for the current Communist sweep of Latin America. So much for the "peace dividend"!!!
And yes, you are probably right about Castro. Once he dies, the way will be paved for the Cuban Communists to change masks and adopt socialism "with a human face." And as usual, the West will probably throw all kinds of money in the name of promoting democracy.
