The Senate labored to complete work by next week on immigration legislation that generally follows an outline Bush set out in a nationally televised speech this week. The measure includes provisions to strengthen border security, create a new guest worker program and crack down on the hiring of illegal immigrants. Most controversially, it offers an eventual chance at citizenship for many of the estimated 11 million to 12 million illegal immigrants already in the country. Senate Republicans staged an impromptu, occasionally emotional debate over whether that amounted to amnesty. Sen. David Vitter of Louisiana said it did. "Surely this is a pardon from what present law says must happen," he said of provisions in the bill that require immigrants to undergo background checks, pay back taxes and take other steps before they can become citizens. Sens. John McCain and Chuck Hagel replied heatedly it was not amnesty. "Let's stop the nonsense," said Hagel, addressing fellow Republicans. "You all know it's not amnesty." Said McCain, addressing Vitter, "Call it a banana if you want to ... to call the process that we require under this legislation amnesty frankly distorts the debate and it's an unfair interpretation of it." Vitter sought the last word. "Methinks thou dost protest too much."

Vitter kicked butt. My former congressman and present senator. LOL...and I like his closing line.

Yeah, I guess Coulter along with Rush, Hannity, Bortze, Levin and Savage all all on their way to insignificance.

Or Terry Jeffries, or Wes Pruden, or Walter Williams, etc etc.

If agreeing with this president on this issue is the measure of significance I don't suppose there'll be too many conservative pundits worth listening to, or reading, before too long.

Disagree with Ann or agree with Ann, this has become a make or break issue for the Republican party and its base, or the conservative base anyway.

Bush's base (the elites, or as Bush calls them - the have's and have-more's) is for amnesty. The conservative base is opposed to amnesty.

The president has a real fence - all around the WH. He should propose that his fence be removed in the interests of openness and friendship. Send the guards home too.

I better not agree with Ann's article, because it appears Bush bashing is about to be outlawed here in favor of feel good platitudes. However, I must say that she could turn a flock of rams into ewes as sharp as her logic is.

You would think so considering that nobody noticed that 6 million were deported.

hey, did anyone see the clip from the Tonight Show last night?
Brit Hume just showed it on his program..

It shows Pres Bush making his address on Monday talking about the illegals and behind him are three Hispanics looking through a window behind Bush and then running away.
It was HILARIOUS!

I prefer my non-practical solution of deportation of leftist US citizens.

The way it's going in order to be considered a true blue loyal conservative we'll have to listen to and agree with the liberal pundits since they're the ones that want this.

one reporter actually asked tony snow about that today and he said no (roughly) it was different than a border fence
