Oh, yeah.

Welcome to FR. Try not to be too much of an ignorant twit on your first day. It's unbecoming.

There's no excuse for you.

Again, try reading for comprehension.

I hate "activists", BTW. Always have.

Will some freeper help me.

Is autism the new word/diagnosis for 'retarded'?

I heard some commercial recently that said that 1 in 167 kids are autistic now. Is that changed. Does that include what we used to call mildly retarded?

More likely his mom took Thalidomide during pregnancy.

Thalidomide was never FDA approved in the US to treat morning sickness. In the late '80's or early '90's it was approved to treat cancer but it has a black box pregnancy warning and only certain doctors can prescribe it.

Funny, I don't feel disabled.

I don't give a rip. I'm exposing a leftist 'journalist' at a pinko rag of a newspaper for what it is. Said journalist picked up on some fellow leftist military-haters, and held them up as typical Americans, all of whom are rightly aggrieved by the EVIL military-industrial complex, as we all should be, all the time.

If you were capable of reading for comprehension, which I'm beginning to doubt, you would know this. As is ... There's a good reason why I hate "activists".

Spare me the whiny, self-righteous, pompous lectures. I know more about the topic than you think.

That's if the word 'think' can rightly be applied to the processing that goes on in your cranium.

Your son can memorize books, I can't even memorize my own address and phone number.

But don't worry, even if this young man was somehow sent to recruit training, he'd be sent home as soon as he failed the physical.

And the alternate headline if the Army had rejected him:

" Boys Family Sues After Army Discriminates Against Him "

Not retarded. Exceptionally bright, in some ways (particularly those that involve memorization, repetition, and organization), but socially extremely inept. One kid I know can memorize anything, perfectly, and repeat it word for word. Doesn't mean he understands in though, which can be a problem.

How autistic do you have to be that a marine recruiter won't take you?

(PS: I love ragging on Marine recruiters, my FORMER brother in law was one, he got me married to my wife )

I've actually known a few savants. One was perfectly normal boy, but could do calendar functions. You could give him a date, and he would tell you what day of the week it was. If he was alive on that day, he could tell you the weather. He lost the ability in puberty (or decided to quit telling people about it)

A friend of the ex wife was a caregiver in a halfway house for adult retarded men. They had a severely impaired indivdual who was a calculator. He was an adult and could out calculate anyone with a calculator.

That's a different phenomenon ... the autistic folks generally have (extreme) difficulty 'reading' other peoples' emotional states, controlling their own, and understanding the fuzzy issues surrounding social interaction. And memorization, again, doesn't necessarily translate to understanding in their case. Imagine an 8 year old repeating, verbatim, a dirty joke that he heard someone else tell, and laughing uproariously about it. When questioned, he hasn't a clue what it means, or why it's funny, or why it's inappropriate to tell to his grandmother ...
