Because I am very interested in seeing the Republicans win in '08, I am posting this for discussion. I am not at all sure I agree with the author, because I have serious reservations about McCain.
However, the points Martin L. Gross makes about the requirements for the job are good ones. Who else might fulfill these?

he seems to be the only one who has that in-born authentic patriotic spirit that requires him to sacrifice for this nation. Plus he seems to have the sense of destiny, shared by Washington, Lincoln, FDR and Reagan -- that he is the only one of his time capable of the onerous job of a president under shattering fire. .....Somebody get a shovel. There's a real load here.

McCain thinks a 'clean running' government is more important than the first amendment. He is most assuredly not the man for the job.
As for who is, it's too early to tell. At this point all these polls and ideas are about is name recognition. Wait until early in 08 and we can see some real candidates.
That said, Mike Pence would be a good choice.

My only comment is that you should have issued the BARF alert.

McCain seriously considered a vice presidential run with John (I served in Viet Nam) Kerry. Do you consider that the sign of a good conservative candidate?

I just threw up things I ate in second grade.
Hes an unhinged, constitution-hating, corrupt hump.

Observing McCain since the 2000 primary has convinced me that he is unbalanced and would not get through a presidential campaign without a serious crack-up.
He still hasn't gotten over having his ass kicked in South Carolina.

In summation, Mr. McCain is the only presidential candidate possible for the Republican nomination There goes the media pushing their favorite candidate, again.

I am not fond of McCain, personally. I worry that he is unstable, to put it politely. But, the entire article is interesting. We do need someone who will inspire the base and the independents to vote Republican, and some of the more conservative Dems to cross over.
Who could that be?

Don't need a liberal in office thank you.
What we do need is a Conservative Governor who understands what it takes to run a large corporation and how to make things work efficiently, effectively and according to a set of guidelines handed down to us from our founding fathers.
Other than that, he could be a Ranger fan for all I care.

The MSM desperately want McCain to be the GOP nominee.
Then they will drag out all that Keating 5 stuff out of the closet and put Hillary Clinton or worse in the White House.

I don't endorse candidates, but I do speak out against those unworthy of the office, thus I don't have an answer, sorry.
