I'll see your "Shkval" and raise you a couple of Mark 48's, since you've been so kind to SCREAM your location.

This is the type of Russian torpedo that was delivered to Iran a few months ago. High speed (220 mph +) torpedoes may help Iran in the event the U.S. decides to deploy aircraft carriers to the Persian Gulf.
Russia has sold Iran submarines designed to hide and wait for American carriers. Putin now claims Russia will be neutral in the event of war. Does anybody here on FR believe Putin?

Russia will be neutral in a war against Iran, like the US was neutral in WWII pre-Dec 7, 1941.

Good old American ingenuity trumps MSM fear-mongering and third world blustering.

The fact that the maximum range of a Shkval or derivative, before its rocket fuel runs out, is only four or five miles, ==
It is probably the range of Shkval-E. Or first generaton of underwater rockets of 1977. But the modern variants has more range. I wonder how far more.

I wouldn't be surprised if there is a variant that quietly launches under propeller power and switches over to supercavitating rocket power when it is "near" the target.

Me second.
Squall was designed in Bauman technical university in Moscow. I know that univercity personally. Thier folk is very very smart. Much smarter then me:). But I aint dumb either:).
Russia do good weaponry during all her history. Because her existance depended on it many times.
I won't be surprised if Squall has some kind of underwater laser homing device:). I heard something about it long ago.
Anyways russian Souz flies those day but american shuttles are not.

I pity the enemy sub that trys to hit another sub or moving ship with a non-manuverable "point and shoot" torpedo, even if it's fast.
Hitting a moving target at 5km with no-homing abilities? It would be like trying to hit a rabbit with a javalin at a 100 yards or more. The only threat I see is if a diesel driver hides and waits for someone to come by, all while staying undetected.

Great article. Something I have been watching and worrying about for the last 6 years. Particularly as we have retired a significant amount of our ASW capanility.
For a frightening view of where the supercavitating capanbility could lead...check out my novel series:
The Dragon's Fury Series
You can download a free adobe eBook containing all five volumes here:

One of the central premises is the devastating use of supercavitating weapons by the Chinese against our Carrier groups in the Pacific.

Do you happen to know who's keeping the bubblehead ping list? Contact FReeper 'Doohickey'; he be 'Da Man'! The current list is on his FR homepage.
