I don't. The bloody things are very, very quiet. They don't need to snorkel, either. The Navy needs this training. I am glad they are getting it.
Probably the best way to deal with it is active pinging from surface combatants. All the quite engines in the world won't hide you from that.

Weeeee once sought a sub
or should we say, they hunted us.
Iiiiit scored direct hits
all while submerged
our ranks were purged.
The Swedes have got an advantage we can't overcome
Their Silent Service is making ours look like bums,
like Bums!
Sooo we'll hunt again,
while they will creep
offshore in the deep...

In my estimation the Swiss have the quietest submarines in the world. The USA was damned stupid for eliminating the diesel-electric program.

I agree. Why do we let so much of our capabilities or incapabilities, go public. Filthy press.

Agreed. The Swiss submarines are the quietest. Actually the whole Swiss navy is extremely quiet.

Quieter than a Kilo. They use liquid ovygen instead of snorkeling.
Super silent.

Yes, and they've also wasted money retrofitting the ships to accomodate the gals. Fortunately, they've left the boats alone for now. Rumsfeld has done nothing to reverse Dick Danzig, and that's a shame.

Believe that if you wish, but that's a pretty expensive ruse to carry on for another year.
I don't buy the US-Sweden conspiracy theory (small, quiet subs are nearly impossible to locate and no one in any navy will tell you otherwise).

Wikipedia claim:
"According to online sources, the HMS Gotland managed to snap several pictures of the USS Ronald Reagan during a wargames exercise in the Pacific Ocean, effectively "sinking" the aircraft carrier. The wargames exercise was done to evaluate the effectiveness of the US fleet against diesel submarine warfare, which some have noted as severely lacking."

No wonder we can't find it. They aren't putting in the water. Once again the Navy was unable to find the Swedish sub as it was towed along I-70 between Indianapolis and Columbus.

Why are they so hot on South Dakota? The balmy weather and all the extra sun they get in January.

Yes, this is part of the WOT - Iran, Pakistan and other nations in that part of the world are modernizing their submarine fleets. In coastal waters the small conventional subs have a clear adwantage over the ASW forces.
Didn't we get to know that when the Russians played around in our waters (on the East cost of Sweden) in the 80s and early 90s.
