The B-17G Flying Fortress “Aluminum Overcast" that Hoover will be flying into Van Nuys on Saturday, catch a ride for $400.

I have a ride booked on Aluminum Overcast during her June visit to Centennial Airport in Denver. I'm counting down the days, and feeling like a kid waiting for Christmas!

R. A. "Bob" Hoover is a bit more than good - even better than the gold standard

See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bob_Hoover for some history.
The world will be poorer when is gone.

Bob is Pilot.

He put on quite show in an Aero Commander (Shrike ?). Finishing up with a dead stick loop and a 3 point landing. I was pre-teen, and just awestruck at his flying ability.

Yup, I saw his demo at a CAF-led airshow in 1983. Even though it was the first time I'd been around warbirds, Hoover's performance is the one thing I remember most clearly.

His Shrike is on display at the Smithsonian, btw ...

To build on what concentric circles said, fighter-variant Spitfires were in US service until mid-1944 or so. Hoover was shot down in February of that year.

Dennis McCarthy pick up the red courtesy phone!

I'm glad to see "Overcast" is doing okay after the landing gear collapsed on landing a while back..

Several years ago I was able to ride in The Collings Foundation's B-17G "Nine O Nine" it was a great ride.

I know you will, but I'll say it anyway... Have Fun!

Amazing story. Aren't those P51 Mustangs pictured?
The most eerie version I ever saw was one in the "Peoples' Revolutionary Military Museum" In Beijing. There was one there with Mao's red stars on it.

Lost over the Pacific without a trace. I assume this was not very far offshore His last radio transmission was something like 'I'm having a problem'. Surely there must be something about this on Google.

Rumor has it that his primary instructor went to his commanding officer and said, 'Sir, I have a problem' to which the CO said "No you don't. Wash him out'. The instructor said 'Sir, you don't understand. He flies the airplane better than I do'.:-)
