Time for the Friday Night Flyby.
Ever wonder how the planes can make those long distance flights? InFlight refueling, eh! Inflite refueling has been around since the days of the open cockpit planes in the 1920s. It was a highly technical venture in the early days consisting of nothing more than a hose from one aircraft to the other aircraft. Kinda hard once the open cockpit went by the wayside.
After WW-II the British, IIRC, came up with the Probe and Drogue system. The drogue, which was a basket on the enbd of a hose, was streamed out behind the tanker. The Aircraft wanting fuel would have to place the Probe into the basket inorder to recieve the need fuel.Boy could Fellini have fun with that :-). The Probe and Drogue system is used by many aircraft and helicopters today.
The other popular method for inflite refueling is the Boeing Flying Boom. The Flying Boom is a hard piped refueling boom with a small pair of wings. The receiving aircraft pulls up below the tanker and the Boom Operater aka the Boomer uses the samll wings to "fly" the boom into the refueling receptacle on the receiving aircraft.
Well on with the pics.
First up a pic of the "Early" method of refueling. Man I'm glad I didn't have to try and catch that hose!!!
A good example of the Flying Boom, here a KC-10 refuels a F-16 while his wingman waits his turn.
Even helicopters can get gas while in flite, here a KC-130 refuels a pair of MH-53 Sea Stallions.
Here is a nice shot of the "Boomers" station in a KC-10. The nice thing about the KC-10 is that the "Boomer" gets to sit in a chair. On the KC-135s the "Boomer" has to lay on his stomach.

And with tears in our eyes we head off into the sunset witha pair of F-105s getting ready to "punch a tanker".
