Ping for later. I'm halfway(?) through. He gave this away for free? I guess he wanted it read. It could've been published in Analog as far hard Science Fiction goes. Of course, that probably would've taken the better part of a year to see print that way.

It's a puzzle. You have to figure it out. Use that great grey matter that God gave you.

It's got to be a place/event/catastrophe or something that became a byword for the war, but obvious enough that he would understand it as something so awful that he couldn't repeat it.

--three words I will not share here in this piece nor ever plan to share, at least until everyone on Earth knows them – three words that will keep me awake nights for months and years to come.---

I don't think anyone has... but I don't think he would say that, because he gave it away with his previous words anyway.

Wanna be on the seldom used Red Dwarf ping list?

It reads like things I used to read in Analog when I could still find a copy of Analog for sale at my local store...been awhile.

"Rember, the three words have to be instructive, and offer an effective course for tipping the eventual outcome...or else they're of no use."

I like archy's take on it.

That meens the three words are NOT in the story.

I like "Forth of July"

I didn't know there was a Red Dwarf thread. Please put me on it. Think I'll brush up on some of them tonight! LOL!

I don't think the grandson believes he can really effect the past. But he might have tried. Otherwise he'd say something like "Use fake names."

Right, but are we trying to come up with a guess that just matches your guess, or do you have inside info on what the actual three words are? I tend to doubt that there are three words.

One of the first things I did way back about 94 when I first got on the net was to go find a site with the red drawf scripts. They had cancelled it for awhile where I lived, and I wanted to see where the story was....

I should probably read more carefully, then.

I am pretty much of a fan of this writer, IMO his stuff is on the level of what we call "literature."

You can get the original Red Dwarf episodes on DVDs now. They are so great! I have a Red Dwarf cup.

I haven't read any of his novels, but after reading this short story I'm thinking I should! ;)

Junior, I have my own reasons for believing what the three words are. Truth is, I could be wrong, but I don't think so. For all I know it could be "Convert to Muslim." Of course, I don't think it's that. I don't think it's a person, place or thing.

One day, maybe.

I was a really crazy Dr. Who fan. When I discovered Red Dwarf I was a bit older, but I liked it just as much.
