You do have a good point. Where tax cuts do increase the tax base by a greater percentage than the revenue cut they can be responsibly decreased.

Take the most direct route to limiting the federal government to the tasks enumerated for it in the Constitution.

No, I am saying that the war accounts for much of the deficit. In fact, it provides an excuse for much of the pork. I am reminded of a similar practice during our Civil War.

I heartily applaud his push to make our tax cuts permanent. What good are tax cuts if the extra revenues are just spent up?
To: Willie Green
I bet he's still down in Cancun on Spring Break. ROFL!

If we can get the tax cuts permanent, that will put major pressure on government to tighten its budget.
BS! As people continue to inch their way up to middle/ upper middle class more and more will be hit with the AMT. Even now many single income filers making $80,000 and double income filers making $140 to $150 are paying AMT.
The FedGov is playing a shell game. By 2012 39% of taxpayers will be paying AMT. Currently the AMT offsets the Bush tax cuts to the tune of about $640 billion a year; and the revenue goes up every year as more and more middle class people suddenly become "rich"!

Here is the link to that Herman Cain article:
http://snipurl.com/ojgw
The INCREASE in revenues from the 2003 tax CUTS are many tens of billions, while at the same time there are 2 million people with jobs who wouldn't have them if the tax cuts had not been passed. Make no mistake about it, if the tax cuts are allowed to expire, those 2 million jobs will be lost (and more) and tax revenues will go down while the deficit goes up.

"Under what conditions do you think we'd be more likely to have success in getting them to cut spending"
Meaningless question. They are not going to cut spending. Period.

"you nailed it Bush knows the next president will have plenty of deficit ammo to ram threw BIG TAX HIKES"
Good thinking Einstein. This is why he wants to make tax cuts permanent?
Fortunately for you, if the cost of living gets too much in your area you can just put some air in, back the truck up and go see cousin Earl. BTW, don't forget to unchain Fido off the back bumper.

"The president argued that he can meet his goal of cutting the deficit in half by the end of his time in office through pro-growth economic policies and spending restraint."
This is a great thread because the morons are surely going to come out and start yelling,"What about the deficit? What about the debt? Bush is a liar! Bush is bad! Bla, bla, bla" and then they can be called out about their true Conservative Philosophy.
Deficit is less than $350 billion, not the $500 billion the Rats keep claiming, and yet is still on the low end of percentage of GDP for the average of the past 30 years. The 90s were good in terms of numbers but the numbers were due to axing the military spending by half at a time we needed to be building. Knocking the deficit down $175 billion is achievable but congress does need to cut discretionary spending and if they can't, give the President a line item veto.
The National Debt is approx $8.6 trillion of which 40% is foreign owned US debt. If these foreign countries called for immediate debt payment the market would ripple initially and the feds would have to immediately raise the interest rate approx 1.5% points making the prime lending rate a bit over 5%. For the ordinary person it means for every $100,000 barrowed on a 30 year note is $100 extra dollars a month. Credit card averages would be at approx. 12%. Even though it would be an initial shock, the market would adjust. On an average historical view, even at these rates, they are at the lower benchmark and would not require a federal tax increase.
Foreign trade stinks right now but if other countries would quit artificially manipulating their currency and America would make products people want then the trade would equalize.
Illegal Immigration is a substantial hit in our spending and does need to end but it shouldn't be taken out of contents about the real cost.
The prescription drug plan started in January and everyone knew the expense but it's too early to say whether it will save in the long run. Many very expensive surgeries are becoming a thing of the past due to medicines and I still believe that medicine cost for a lifetime are usually far less than even one surgery even at the highest cost medicine but we'll see.
