Are you denying they are vigilantes?Yes. Read the definition you posted.
a member of a volunteer committee organized to suppress and punish crime summarily
It's the punishing of crime that is the crux of the matter. All the minutemen do is watch the border - they do not summarily punish anyone.
Are neighborhood watch members vigilantes too?
To: cabojoe
Yes, I know. I posted the link where Bush referred to the Minutemen as "vigilantes". He was asked what he thought about the Minutemen by the media and his response was that he is against "vigilantes".
I'll give you an "E" for effort.
Nice try!

I say he referred to them as vigilantes, and didn't mean it as a compliment. That's mostly right I think, he meant to say that vigilantism is not a good thing......... maybe not so directly at the guys in general.

You don't think turning them in to the Border Patrol is PUNISHMENT?
Are they letting them go?

Get your nose out of The New American.
You must be mixed up. You're the only one to mention that publication.

I thought I would try a little homor to lighten up things. Life is way to short argue this amongst FRiends. We all have our opions on this.
To: Junior_G
Was Bush talking about the Minutemen, and then just coincidentally went off on an unrelated tangent about vigilantes?
LOL! I guess rather than admit that Bush refered to the Minutemen as vigilantes, there are some here that would rather think he was getting senile and rambling incoherently.

Well you missed where I came in and what I was referencing or you wouldn't have asked your question....chew on this for awhile:
Mr. Bush's description of the Minutemen as vigilantes is a misreading of American history. The vigilantes were a lynch mob. The Minutemen are an expanded version of the Neighborhood Watch programs popular in many American cities. It's sad to see an American president roll out a royal welcome to a foreign dignitary so openly contemptuous of U.S. law, while simultaneously condemning Americans who are trying to help duly constituted authorities enforce the law.

Are you denying that they aren't vigilantes?Your comment suggests that you a) agree that Bush did in fact refer to them as vigilantes and b) aren't too fond of the Minutemen yourself. Is that accurate? Not that there's anything wrong with that.
To: Mo1; Howlin; Junior_G
There were also reports of a few minutemen wanting to start a civil war. The Border Patrol has enough problems already than to be caught in the crossfire of AK-47 gunfire.

Rather than speculate on what could have been, the evidence shows that our sovereignty has been harmedNo it doesn't. Not in the least.
Could you put up a post without the word "sovereignty" in it? You've worn that word out.

You don't think turning them in to the Border Patrol is PUNISHMENT? No, punishment means being judge and jury. By your definition, a neighborhood watch progam is a vigilante group because they watch their neighborhood and turn offenders into the police.
