Are you really from Atlanta? Good Stay there. ;-) Not sure how to take your post. You seem to tell me I'm all wrong but then agree with the point of my post in your last sentence.
The point is that California is not a very socially conservative state. There are pockets here and there but someone like Alan Keyes or Orin Hatch just isn't going to get elected there.

Do note the Washington Times doesn't do a complete quote of the President It is common knowledge in this website and known by most conservatives that Bush referred to the Minutemen as "vigilantes". I'm surprised to hear somebody here at FR does not know this. It's as rare as somebody asking for a link where John Kerry claimed he was once in Vietnam.

I followed that link and the press briefing makes it sound like Bush called them vigilantes, and they all seemed to agree it was the Minutemen they were talking about.
