the program needed a, a foreword. It needed a little bit of history for the present generations.Yes, and how about an afterword too, Mr. Cronkite -- one which speaks of the Venona transcripts and the KGB files and the statements by Soviet officials -- you know, the stuff that proves that McCarthy and the anti-communists were basically correct in their claims?
I think that would be a good bit of history to include for present and future generations. It would help them to have a more complete understanding of who was right and who was wrong. Of course, it would also demolish the film's intended purpose, and make people like Cronkite and Clooney look kinda silly.

Nobody pays any attention to that old goat. Most people alive today don't even know who he is. Cronkite's nuts, but he's not dangerous--just another blathering old fool, trying to relive his salad days (his salad hit the garbage can a long time ago).

Frankly Walter, I don't give a damn what you think. In fact, I eagerly look forward to reading your obituary soon, you old hypocritical gasbag!

Saw that show - yup, sure did - and it wasn't intentional. Was over at a friend's house trying to get some balky FTP going and his TV was on PBS for some reason, with Crankcase droning on in the background. Didn't pay much attention to it until I heard "Vietnam" and "Iraq" come up from Smith, and Crankcase's rambling response, which left him wide open to get pinned by a hard line of questioning, but of course I knew that wasn't gonna happen. Crankcase got in his shots and then it was 'awww, we're out of time, goodnight everybody!'

It was a misplaced trust to begin with.We can see that today, but at the time there was no alternate media. There were a few conservative magazines, but nothing that had mass exposure or influence.
Walter Cronkite defined our reality, and that's the way it was.

I think the most trusted thing was originaly put out by CBS itself. It may have stuck somewhat but it reminds of how CNN bills itself today. Self promoting idiots is how I would characterize them.

I think the comparison [between Vietnam and Iraq] is almost exact.
You obviously don't want our troops there, Walter, but the simple truth is that they're there because they want to be there. We have an entirely volunteer service in Iraq. Now, if you're not willing to serve or aid the war effort, that's one thing, but for Pete's sake, you old goat, stop tring to undermine those who are.

Peppi Marchello and "The Good Rats" were way ahead of thier time when in 1974 they penned the lyric "extra extra read all about it!
Walter Cronkite you brontosaurus!"

Someone needs to do a movie on the Cold War with emphasis on the Verona Papers. There is an incredible disconnect in the body politic regarding spies, their existence and their intentions.
There are two main ideas that are brainwashed into children educationally. One is that pollution is evil and businesses (capitalism) create pollution. The other is that enemies of the United States are fictitious, nothing to worry about - the real enemies are patriots.
Both of these ideas are subversive. They must be fought in the popular culture if possible.
