Ditto here; I'm eighteen, conservative as it gets and have no tolerance whatsoever for whining.
As far as self-confidence goes, my guidance couselor (an unusually sane guidance counselor for a public school) used to say that there are two kinds of self-confidence. One is the "I'm-me-so-I'm-incredible" mentality that makes any sane human being near the person in question violently nauseous. The second is the "I work d*mn hard and I'm proud of it" mentality that one would want to be around.
I assume that conservatives tend to fall into the latter category.
Ah, once again, a 'soft science' practioners proves that despite all efforts to date, one still can't polish sh*t.
Oopsie! Should have used "practioner" - excuse the plural, please.
His kids will turn into whiney all the time adults. Your probably will not. That is the major difference
1. Extinguish a cigarette
2. Lecture you about the perils of fatty foods
3. Prattle on about "binge drinking"
4. Admonish you for the allergic perils of peanut dust
5. Castigate you for driving an SUV...
Is that person usually a CONSERVATIVE...?!
I'd think I'd feel the same way at Berkeley.
In our home, there was a "NO WHINING" rule. Whiners, (adults included)
were not recognized. If you wanted to be acknowledged, you had to present
respectful and persuasive conversation / requests / arguments with words
that included please and thank you. Our response was usually, to repeat
their request so they knew they were heard, then either yes, no, or give
me 24 hours to give an answer. Of course, this started as soon as the children
were old enough to speak... around age 2.
You see, Mother taught us to raise a dog before we raised children. Her
idea being that if we have an obedient dog, we'll have obedient children.
IMHO, humans will treat a dog better and expect more from a dog than their
own children. Sigh.
Because of this "NO WHINING" rule, my husband and I boast children who...
1. Are excellent in debate
2. Have a large vocabulary
3. Are extremely conservative
4. Have a college education
5. Will give us grandchildren from hetero marriages.
With all humor and respect to your spouse, it sounds like you did good work
considering your liberal handicap. LOL! Unequally yoked is difficult. I am
blessed with a like minded husband (married 31 years today).
My family includes whiners and stoics both ... and at this point we are ALL conservative. Even me, the whiner ;>) who voted for Dukakis. Even I saw the light. Check when the kids are 20 then check again when they are 40 and have had some real-life experiences.
Just remember that a 'conservative' in Berkely is a flaming liberal anywhere else in the U.S.
UPDATE: MALKIN ON WHINY CHILDREN
