Hehehehe --- old Helen Thomas is still stubbornly clinging to the "war monger" question ... she just can't let it go .. presser after presser after presser. People -- get her some Milk of Amnesia, please.

She's stuck on stupid.

W does seem a bit pi**ed.

I would be too if I was getting constantly hammered by the left winged media and their penchant for lying.

Unless you change the laws governing the entitlement programs, the benefits and rates of increase follow established formulas and indicies.

It takes 15 minutes to pass a law that undoes all of that. There is no such thing as forced entitlements. There is nothing that requires a drug addict to take the next hit, an alcoholic to take the next drink, a smoker to take the next drag.....each one of those, and each spending bill, could be that last in the chain...at any time.

There are political considerations when you are dealing with benefits affecting over 75 million people

So what? So you mean there is no easy, convenient way to quit their habit? Too bad. But don't pretend that it's "impossible." It's entirely possible at any time, the process allows it. What seems "impossible" is to elect congresscritters that have the will to quit.

I submit we citizens have little idea what is going on behind the scenes in Africa, where we are trying to help stabliize the situation and get some allies there to keep the terrorists from taking over.

For a picture taken before the 04 elections, get ahold of Richard Miniter's Shadow Wars.

Then get his next book, Disinformation.

But FNC and Bill Hemmer are doing some really good reporting from Iraq today

OT: I watched Day After Tomorrow this morning on HBO (DISH Network has a free preview of HBO and Cinemax going on) and laughed hysterically for an hour and 45 minutes. First casualty was a lowly FOX News Channel reporter, and the first structural damage with the HOLLYWOOD sign. I jumped out of my chair and sang "Hoo-ray for Hollyweird!"

Helicopter reporter was screaming "Lisa! Are the camera's rolling? The Hollywood sign is being destroyed by a monster tornado!! OMG!!!"

I am so tired of the Bush bashing!!! For your information Congress is responsible for spending. Anyway, 2/3rds of all economic activity comes from consumer spending. You can put government spending in that basket. Bottom line, all spending makes the economy grow even faster. That is why this economy is so strong even after 911, Hurricanes (Katrine, Rita and all those storms that hit Florida) etc. Give Bush the line item veto and he will reduce government spending in due time.

It's funny as hell when you know all the leftist talking points, and their hatred for the right, and how they amazingly crammed it all into a 2 hour movie. LOL

I can thankfully say I saw it during an HBO free preview and didn't have to pay to see it. LOL

George W made a mistake by relying on his own people and the Congressional members, a spinless bunch of woosey, entrenched, career flatulence masquerading as public servants to defend and promote his policies."

EXACTLY!!! And I thought it was worth being repeated!!!

:o

Not to repeat myself, but I forgot to add gormless worms to the Congressional description...

You are talking about mechanics and process. I am referring to the political reality. Unless you have a consensus on how to reform entitlements, you can't change the existing system, which continues to function according to the prescribed rules. Simple as that.

So what? So you mean there is no easy, convenient way to quit their habit? Too bad. But don't pretend that it's "impossible." It's entirely possible at any time, the process allows it. What seems "impossible" is to elect congresscritters that have the will to quit.

It has nothing to do with quiting. Congress has to change the system. Change is not only possible, it is unavoidable. The current system cannot be sustained. The battle is over how the system will be changed and when.

It is a struggle over political power and ideology. In the case of SS, the Dems favor keeping FDR's Ponzi scheme in place with a few tweaks such as raising the retirement age, increasing the cap, changing the COLA computation formula, etc. The net result would be to kick the can down the road again as was done in 1983.

Most Reps would like to convert part of the system to private accounts with a smaller defined benefits portion of the program. Eventally, most of it could be privatized eliminating the USG's looming huge liability. The UK, Chile, and other countries have already privatized their retirement systems. The Dems (and some Reps) are adamantly opposed because it lessens the dependence on government. It also removes a political issue from them, i.e., making the election year charge that the Reps want to take benefits away from the old and infirm and eliminate SS.

Clearly you know nothing about budgeting if you think any President can simply remove the mandatory spending dollars at his/her whim.

I never stated that or indicated that. What I said was, by example, POTUS can set the tone and example. If George Bush is asking Congress for new entitlement programs (which he has done) and President Bush submits budgets that has spending increases at gigantic rates of increase for useless and overlapping and redundant agencies (which he has done), then that sets a bad tone and a very poor example for Congress, especially if he wants to work with Congress to reign in mandatory spending. I have also stated that Bush has not made this a priority in his major speeches, which has also set a poor example.

Absolutely! I missed the press conference but Rush has been playing a whole bunch of soundbytes, and he sounds like he's in complete charge of the press conference, sounding confident, and sounding like a leader, and smacking down the left winged press with complete civility.

Rush said he sent the White House a note saying that president Bush needs to be doing more of this sort of stuff.
