Of course they could - he was out of power and he may have had Serbs killed for political reasons. Saddam is not being tried for gassing the Kurds or Iranians is he? He is being charged by his own countrymen for the murder of innocent Iraqis killed in retaliation for a failed coup attempt.
What the international community wanted (as the international community was composed of Third Way leftists in the 90s and that is the model the UN Court follows) was a show trial to push an agenda.
The Serbs were to be the scape goat people to be sacrificed for this new world court. This is old fashioned communist show trial these third way western leftists adopted for the new era. First is to demonize a people then have them humiliated in front of the court with the outcome not being justice but the accused admitting they are wrong and evil and being broken for all to see making a confession of their wrongs. Orwell did not invent '1984' out of thin air - he based it on Stalin's USSR.
This Milosevic, as amoral a man as he may have been (maybe you have to be to rule in that part of the world) did not do. This frustrated the UN court and defeated it.
It was never about the verdict because that was predetermined.
It is a hard thing to defend a man like Milosevic against teh UN court but of the two the concept of a UN court as all kangaroo political courts is more evil than people claimed Milosevic ever was.

This is not finished. Serbs will have to accept the responsibility of the death of 200 000 of Bosnian Muslims, 100 000 of Croatians and 200 000 of Muslim Albanians. They will have to submit to the perpetual EU/NATO occupation.

They are imposing sharia in little bits over time. The sharia imposed death penalty for adultery is on the books in Bosnia.

I agree, Proctor. The negotiated settlement would, perhaps, have preserved a bridge or two over the Danube, and the Chinese would not have to remodel the embassy, but in addition to the festering wound of Kosovo, the entire Serbia would have been under the Brussel's boot.
With Slobo's defiance, the "court" in the Hague is permanently discredited and the Serb nation has grown a spine.

Jeez, there you go again, just like the Yugoslavs after WWII, inflating numbers. Total number killed in Bosnia was somewhere between 90,000 and 100,000. In Croatia maybe 20,000. Kosovo less. So at most we are talking about less than 150,000 overall in all the "Balkan Wars" of the 1990s...
Not that this is not an outrage, but it is far less than the numbers being thrown around for political purposes by irresponsible people...
You might want to double-check that point of view with a sample of educated Serbians living in Serbia...few would hold such a view...
