Public school teachers and common sense. Exact opposites.

Several Martinsville High School students say teachers stopped their calls to 911 while a fellow student was choking, because cell phones aren't allowed on campus.

If the teachers are lucky, they will only be sued and not charged with negligent homicine.

He says one of his friends tried to call 911 with his cell phone, but just as he reached an operator, he says a teacher closed his phone saying cell phones aren't allowed on campus.

This sounds like BS. If I was a witness to the choking the teacher who tried to close my phone would have to learn how to write tests with their left hand.

If you have asked to be added to this list, and haven’t been receiving the pings, please let me know. I’ve had a problem with my file synchronization between my home and work computer, and apparently have lost some names on the list. I think I have the problem fixed, and will gladly re-add your name.

Paramedics rushed the 15 year-old freshman to the hospital, where he later died.

If he made it to the hospital alive I don't see how choking could have been the primary cause of death.

24 Hour News 8 spoke to another student witness who also wants to remain anonymous. He says one of his friends tried to call 911 with his cell phone, but just as he reached an operator, he says a teacher closed his phone saying cell phones aren't allowed on campus.

Amazing all the teacher bashing and they are relying on an "anonymous" source.

This is about on the same level as an incident where a second or third grade girl got a drug record. A student on a school bus had a severe asthma attack, perhaps even anaphylactic (sp?) shock. The girl gave the student a hit off of her escape respirator. The physician at the ER said that was a life saver. Her reward - kicked out of school, arrested, drug record due to the zero tolerance policy.

24 Hour News 8 did speak to Jesse's father Friday night. Understandably, he says he's still in shock and just wants to know exactly what happened.

What happened is his child tried to eat a hamburger too fast and wound up choking. That is the proximate cause of his death. The business with the cell phones and everything else has very little to do with it.

Perhaps if somebody had been trained in First Aid and been on the spot to render help, this child could have been saved. But if you are waiting 20 minutes for the ambulance to rescue a choking victim, they're going to be 15 minutes too late. Whether they get there is 20 or 22 minutes is irrelevant.

A book title of a few years ago covers DAMN NEAR ALL that goes on in this country, indeed, the WORLD today. The title? "THE DEATH OF COMMON SENSE."

The other element that plays into this NEEDLESS TRAGEDY is my permutation of the Outback restaurant advertising motto of "No rules, just right." NO RIGHTS, JUST RULES!

I often wonder if the increasing stupidity and lack of discernment of more and more American people -- in this case, one of those among us who, as a TEACHER, is SUPPOSED to be better educated and perspicacious -- doesn't put us in jeopardy of repeating the disaster visited upon the world in the 30s when obedience to the RULES promulgated by their insane furher and his minions was more important than moral and ethical considerations. MILLIONS paid for THAT national lapse.

Speaking of titles, there is one famous song title that really ought to be changed to "God SAVE America."

This just high lights the utter uselessness of jr high and high school health curriculums.

At our local school they waste an entire semester droning about birth control and STDs.

In that same amount of time, students could have studied and received First Aid/CPR and Food Handlers certificates. Things that would actually improved their chances of summer employment.

It's just pathetic how they waste time, resources and peoples lives instead of adopting what should be an obvious training program for all 13-15 year olds.

If that were my son, the so-called teacher would have been knocked to the ground and then call would have been made.

That teacher will never recover...and she may face charges.

Not that I am defending her negligent, ignorant actions, but the emotional torment she will face will certainly never end. I pity her, and pray for her along with the family.

A truly horrible story.

And a perfect example of how group-think and regulation destroy the ability of the individual to act wisely and with conviction.

The students calling 911 had a better thought process than the teacher, who could only respond to the brainwashing of regulation "close the phone." A few more years in the system and the student will probably also be a phone-closer.

Unbelievable.

What an awful story.
It's just like teenage boys to rush thru lunch to get outside to play some basketball or something else of interest.

I sent this article to my 15 year old grandson.

Prayers for Jesse and his family.

Hi All-

As an aside, a surefire technique to ensure one receives simultaneous help from police, EMS, and firefighters is to simply pull the fire alarm in the school cafeteria. This will provide an accurate location to emergency responders without the potential "translational errors" of an excited student attempting to speak to an operator.

I've read the discussion, and let me add one comment about the teacher and the cell phone. If it's true, even if the call didn't really matter, if the teacher didn't know whether it would matter she's just as guilty.
