The #1 source for the information can be found at the World Health Organization's website.
I was going to stay out of this smoking issue, but I don't believe anything the ACS says. You got to understand something. They are extremely biased, one sided, liberal think tank. I know doctors that will not contribute anything to the ACS because of their scare tactics, lies, and deceptive practices.
From the American Cancer Society website:
"Tobacco smoke causes more than 8 out of 10 cases of lung cancer."
100% total absolute BS propaganda. Not any truth to it.
World Health Organization's web site:
"Smoking causes lung cancer. An increase in tobacco consumption is paralleled some 20 years later by an increase in the incidence of lung cancer, and a decrease in consumption is followed by a decrease in incidence. The association between lung cancer and smoking was demonstrated in the 1950s and has been recognized by public health. It is generally recognized that tobacco smoking is the etiologic carcinogen in 80% to 90% of all lung cancer cases. In men, smoking causes more than 80% of lung cancer cases. There is also a clear doseresponse relationship between lung cancer risk and daily cigarette consumption (people that smoke). Cigarette smoke is a complex mixture of toxic compounds with almost 4000 components, at least 50 of which have been identified as carcinogens."

As I said before, ACS is a BS institution, and that is more worried about you and I donating to them, and is in a scare tactic to solicit funds. I personally know of two cancer specialists, combined they have 60 years experience in the field, that dispute the statistics that ACS have, with clinical and research data to back them up. One of these doctors is related to me, amd I find him very credible. Too bad you didn't add the part from the WHO about no link between second hand smoke and lung cancer.
Good day!
I also have a very good doctor friend who told me that over 85% of people who have lung cancer are smokers. This was in response to my mother's small cell lung cancer. Yes, she smoked like a train but to the end totally believed her smoking had nothing to do with the disease. She died at 68, her parents lived well into their 80's.
The math is clear to me.
