That RORO operation took place in Cam Ranh Bay about May of 1967.

When was the last time we built an armored ship? I thought the aluminum vs. steel debate had been settled with the HMS Sheffield and the USS Stark.

Not that I know of.
We are depending on active defense for protection. Armor is still used to protect some vital combat systems and machinery areas, but the weight involved to have an armored hull would significantly decrease speed. The ARLEIGH BURKE destroyers are good examples.
Our latest class of carriers has 2 inches of armor on the flight deck and 1.5 inches protecting engine spaces and hanger deck.
