I'll bet if Chen goes independence and China attacks, he'll be the FIRST one to flee the island. That's the type of leader he is.
He's doing this because he wants his DPP political base to grow - hence, all the hooplas about 2-28 and the attacks on Chiang Kai Shek (without whom he wouldn't even be in power in Taiwan) and his role on 2-28.
I don't think that China will ever attack Taiwan unless Chen declares independence, so all the speculation is sort of moot -- they're more interested in having an economic successful Taiwan, then one that would be destroyed if there is a conflict (doesn't matter if China wins or not, Taiwan's economy will be in shambles if conflict occurs). The next move is really up to Chen.
See, to the Indians, they just don't get why KMT wouldn't want independence. :) They just don't get the cultural ties between the two. Even as Ang Lee wins the oscar, he said "thanks to the support iN Taiwan, Hong Kong and CHINA" and then he spoke in putonghua (mandarin Chinese) at the end. That must have pissed off Chen alot that he didn't use the local Taiwanese dialect :D
People view Taiwan issue as a simple issue, but it's extremely complex in its core.
India has made this deal with the USA because they want to have alternatives to the islamees. And they clearly see the threat of china in the near future.
They had nothing to lose, complaining...and maybe the Jewish lobby in the US could knock on a few doors and make a difference.
That's alright dude -- you can keep up thinking that INdia is an awesome country, blah blah blah, but i am pointing out the obvious -- you side with Islamic Iran as much as China does.
And besides calling yourself the world's most populous democracy, maybe it shoudl be the worlds MOST POOR democracy, lagging behind a COMMUNIST state like China by 1/2 per capita terms (and that's including purchasing parity). A country so great that they ahve won LESS OLYMPICS MEDALS than Taiwan.
Someday china will be free and unite with Taiwan. Then the apologists will be silent.

They're playing a waiting game between China and US. They're expected to trade MORE with China than US by next year.
I dont' blame them for playing the waiting game, but i am just pointing out the obvious thing that htey're doing (which indcons doesn't like, because it shows that India is two sided and manipulates and I dont' actually blame them for their own interests. I just don't like it when they're pretending that they are in unaninimous support of US policies when in fact, they are not).
Their jealousy is eating them alive. This deal will hurt the chicom way alot. Watch and see.

Israel has to stop selling arms to China. Period. It's suicidal long term strategy, and an insult to its allies.
And, have no fear, I think India will continue buying Israeli made weapons.
