These Taser stories always hyperventilate about the Volts -- as if it were a meaningful metric. 50,000 Volts sounds more dangerous than 15 to 20 Watts -- the actual power of a Taser.
Why do we never hear news reports of the thousands of school children that are zotted with up to 25,000 Volts -- every day? (Static electricity from shuffling across a carpet.) It's not the same thing, obviously, but it does show how meaningless the Voltage is without also knowing the Amperage, duration, frequency, etc.

Guns and tasers allow an officer of either sex to stop a violent person without getting so close as to risk injury from a knife or fist or whatever, wielded by the target. No reason a male officer should choose physical contact with a violent person, when his personal safety is at greater risk that way. Our first priority needs to be to protect our law enforcement officers from any harm, not to protect violent thugs and drug addicts from "excessive" force.

Dennis Crouch had already slashed himself. And when he refused to drop his knife, Daytona Beach police Officer Betsy Cassidy decided she had no choice. Why couldn't she just let him finish the job?

You're right - the story really is kind of sad.
But the FReeper response comments - I'm afraid they have me in stitches. ;-)

Over here it brings satire and humor. On the DU they would be screaming police brutality and man's inhumanity to man. It's that man's constitutional right to burn, damnit!!!!
