And I think you are extremely naive to think that ethnic cleansing will lead to anything other than eternal war and even more extreme fanaticism than we are currently seeing. And if the US is seen to be complicit in this, we will have even worse problems in that region than we currently have (if possible).
I will argue that the US were extremely reasonable to the Sunnis. It got us nothing but IED's. So were the Shiites and they got carbombings and lots of dead civilians. It is the Sunnis who are cruel and ruthless and they get what they deserve. The US needs to sit back and let the Sunnis and Shiites resolve their power struggle (Sunnis are outnumbered 3-1, do the math). The Civil War will be over in a heartbeat. The impact in the Arab world will be nothing. Remember, in the Arab world, only Arab can kill Arab, even if the killings are unjustified. They will never tolerate infidel killing Arab, even if the infidel is justified to do it. You cannot apply American logic in the Middle East. Sorry to say this, I am not naive, you are naive. You need to read up Arab and Persian history, especially their modern political culture and history. It is a harsh system. The only people who would get bent out of shape is the EU, MSM and American liberals. There is three principles about civil wars. Rule one - pick a side, Rule two - pick the winning side, Rule three - never play policeman and be caught in the middle.
I wish. (((sigh)))
So when the nightly news is full of stories of piles of Sunni and Shia bodies in fields and abandoned buildings, and US Military spokespeople saying "It's an internal Iraqi matter, we're not involved", this is a viable policy? Soldiers leaning on their rifles as people are dragged off? You honestly think that all the Sunnis will be slaughtered, or that the remaining fragments will just cower passively in their homes and peace will be restored?
I'm sorry, but the administration entered Iraq with a stated goal of bringing Democracy to the people of Iraq. Abandoning them to death squads, militias and malign neglect will lead to no desirable outcome.
Just for starters, why don't we let the government of Iraq fight the insurgents their way? They know who the insurgents are, who are sympathizers and the villages that support them. Let them use their counter insurgency forces and secret police deal with this whole insurgency infrastructure without the US wringing their hands that their methods do not meet our definitions of civility. We have used our methods for three years and we have not stop the IED's and the carbombs. Talk to the soldiers who served in Iraq. Captured insurgents are not afraid of our soldiers until they are told that they will be turned over to the Iraqi police and security. If we do not allow the Iraqis subjugate Sunni arrogance, there will be no peace in Iraq, and worst our soldiers will have to return to fight them again. By the way, the Sunnis (only 20 percent) was able to force the rest of Iraq cower to them for over forty years, you are trying to tell me, the Kurds and Sunnis combined cannot leash in the Sunnis. The Sunnis are not supermen. Iraqis are not limited like the US, they will deal with meddlesome reporters and cameramen, and they will censor reports. That is something we cannot do, and that is why we are losing this war on the homefront because our media will report only the US mistakes and casualties and none of our successes. More important, the war against the Sunnis have strong support amongst the Kurds and Shias because of past Sunnis atrocities against them via Saddam and Baathist.
