This would be an awesome developement. The $1 million question is who will retire and who will be chosen to fill the vacancy.

Stevens is going to retire (he is after all a 120-year old Republican). Let's just hope that he decides to retire after 2005/2006 term.

Stevens supposedly told the White House that even though he is a Rockefeller Republican (he was President Gerald R. Fords only Court appointee during the period when Nelson A. Rockefeller was Vice President) he believes the Court would not move radically to the right should he depart. This indicates to me that Stevens is probably somewhat senile; on the other hand, Bush should go along with him and then as soon as he retires, appoint another strict constructionist.

"The Majority Leader also made it clear that he would not tolerate a filibuster of such a nominee and would exercise the so-called Constitutional Option if Senators insisted upon trying to block an up-or-down vote by a simple majority."
Yeah right!

Thanks for the downer, Mr. Weyrich. (/sarc.)

The Democrats need a 6 seat shift to retake the Senate.
The Dems will lose a net 1 seat.

That's a great idea. My choice to succeed John Paul Stevens would be former Assistant Attorney General Viet Dihn.

The far left now so controls the Democratic Party that it is in a position to make demands of even its senior Senators. That's what is making politics so much fun right now. It's a blast just watching the Democrats obeying the marching orders from their kook fringe. Even old timey politicians like Ted Kennedy have to "dance to their music".
They could start a new TV show called "America's Funniest Liberals".

Stevens
Ginsberg and
Kennedy
will all be gone in the next year (by early 2007). The three are old, feeble and sick.

Well, I don't think he's right that we'd lose the Maine twins or Specter, assuming he picked someone that was as well qualified as Alito and Roberts. There were at least a half-dozen other names that were considered the last two times that would easily pass that test. Both Ediths, Garza, McConnell, possibly even Cornyn, etc. would lose no R votes with the exception of the true definition of a RINO Chafee.
Either way, it would be a huge coup for us electorally. It would depress D turnout if they didn't fillibuster, and increase R turnout, and hurt them with swing voters, if they did.
We can't lose on this one! Hope it happens!
