110 per month.. even on average that is too many....

If you eat these in place of bread, and enchiladas, burritos, and tacos are a big part of your diet, less than 4 a day is not many at all. My guess would have been 6-8 a day at least.

"General Motors and other U.S.-owned factories paid $17 million without admitting wrongdoing"

I guess they'll (whoever they are) will give the $17 million back now, huh?

I remember an article from some years back, the title of which was something like " The Brainless Babies of Brownsville, Texas "...
It concerned something very similar, but they were blaming chemicals in the Rio Grande if I recall..

It would be great if someone can finally get a handle on this and determine the actual cause..

I have a nephew who contracted spinal meningitis from birdseed containing corn. Speculation was that it was from the mold or from the bird droppings

big fyi... "spinal" meningitis (is there any other kind of meningitis, like liver meningitis or anal meningitis)is caused by bacteria, viruses and not from corn. If you are immunosuppressed, other types of organisms can cause meningitis....toxoplasmosis, leptospira etc...

I hope you sued the birdseed company or the corn farmer....or the owner of the bird.

So are they going to give back the money wrongly taken from GM and other companies?

I won't be holding my breath.

It's only a little over three a day. That's not much when you eat them for most meals, if not all of them.

300/month would be 10 per day. That does seem a bit excessive, but 110/month is just over 3 per day. They may have rarely eaten flour tortillas. Corn tortillas really aren't so bad for you as flour ones, because they have no added fat. The corn is oilier than wheat flour, so it will stick together without any fat added. It's just corn meal, and lime water. That's it. Flour tortillas, OTOH, are full of lard.

was under the impression that Monsanto has a stranglehold on seed corn in the Midwest

First of all, the Rio Grand valley is not generally considered "The Midwest". Secondly there are lots of seed corn producers in the corn growing regions. I don't think Monsanto owns all or even most of them. There are several others listed as producing bioengineered seed corn. But not all corn is bioengineered, other than the way everything else you eat is, that is by selective breeding. AFAIK, the latter is still the most used seed corn, not the genetically modified stuff, although the use of GM strains has been growing steadily.

I can give you facts about the pesticides used in conventional farming but the proof is eating a tomato grown yourself without any toxic poison and a storebought tomato.

The main reason store bought tomatoes are so vile is that they are bred for mechanical harvesting. Not because pesticides, fertilizers, etc are used on them. If you planted the same plants/seed in your garden, and did not use the pesticides or non organic fertilizers, they'd still be vile.

My Dad used to grown great tomatoes, or so I'm told, I'm not very fond of tomatoes myself, at least not to eat by themselves. His secret, other than a careful choice of tomato plants? His fully organic fertilizer, AKA pigeon poop, and later chicken shit. His fertilizer came from his coops. Of course you pretty much had to wear a dust mask when "collecting" that stuff, which I did, many a summer. Nothing like a hot coop full of pigeon poop dust, which you are deliberately stirring up as you scrape it off.

By "extortion money" do you also include money paid to lobbyists by companies like Monsanto?

That might be construed as bribe money. But extortion money is money paid to avoid something even worse. Danegeld was paid to keep the Danes away for instance. Sometimes it worked, sometime it didn't.

when I was a kid, these mexican girls in the neighborhood would just heat tortillas on the natural gas stove and put some butter on it....not in a pan, but right on the burner.

Many cultures do something similar... Fat Euros take bread and butter to the local restaurant to eat it, while sitting on the patio. They think the restaurant bread and butter is too expensive.

Actually, I think that they supply their own bread and butter because many Euros are not super wealthy, also I think they do it because they like to sit around and talk about History, The history of France.... : )

And their hatred of America.

Should you go to Europe brush up on your history... so you can talk to them at their level.... : )

Euros, bread and butter... what a joke.

I agree however one thing that I have noticed is that many cultures are too fixated on one thing, like torillas.

Because I like to remain active and athletic, I like to have a varied diet - with many greens.

For instance, cowboy Texans like Bar B Que... with bread, Mexican's like rice and beans/meat and tortillas..... The Brits like Fish and Chips - Greasy chips..

Go to Puerto rico and they will serve you a table full of meat (pork) for breakfast, lunch and dinner...

What happened to the greens...... who knows...

I've not heard of Pathmark. It is strictly an organic store?

It's a mainstream grocery store. I was surprised to find organics there that are cheaper than Whole Foods. It's a gem really. Good price on the most important organics like apples, celery and grapes, the stuff that gets sprayed the most. WFM can't be beat for bulk items though like wheatgrass seed.

Thanks. I have a daughter who's a naturopath and she's been educating me over the past several years. I cannot believe what a difference organic means. In the Midwest the closest we can come to mainstream organic is HyVee but we're having a problem with apples now as they are storage apples and the skins are very tough. Have you experienced this?

Oh yes. That's why I buy the little bag of fresh apples. Don't know where they're getting them from but I paid seventy cents for an organic apple the other day. I'm glad that my soon-to-be DH has unpesticided, herbicided sprayed to death! apple trees in his backyard (and blueberries too!).

My daughter says the best apples now would be from New Zealand where they're in season. Sounds like you have quite a nice garden, etc.? I'm still wondering which "heritage" tomato seeds you grew on a compost pile? Big Boys?
