The Purple Land is the title of a short romantic adventure novel by W H Hudson. Hudson, a naturalist and authority on So. Amer. tropical bird species, was a Brit born and raised in Argentina. Hudson is on my short reading list if I am ever stranded on a deserted isle.

For me, using "purpleland" is not a stand for the weakened compromise or central line between so-called middle class heartland Red and snotty elite leftist Blue states.

I read Bonfire of the Vanities when I was 20 or 21 and loved it. (I probably need to read it again) Although I realize now that Tom Wolfe is a liberal (maybe even ultra) I learned a lot from that book. I even named my daughter Campbell after Sherman McCoy's (the protagonist) daughter. Unfortunately the movie sucked.

It seems most writers, like Tom Wolfe, are "liberal" because of the strangle-hold by "liberal" critics, reviewers and publishers - and the influential ARTY-FARTY patron society. It's very nearly the same for artists hoping to get their work into gallerys and reviewed. Every time I go to an art exhibit, I get the impression that everyone is trying to impress everyone else with their aire of "liberalism." Some poseurs, some passionate.

I love the name "Campbell" - that's really neat!

Have to confess - didn't read Bonfire, never saw the movie.
Right now, I'm reading Brit Rebeccah West's semi-autobio novel THE FOUNTAIN OVERFLOWS about a genteel Victorian musically (piano) talented but poor family per the class-conscious standard of the times.

If I get another horse, I'm going to name him "Campbell" - I LOVE that name, that word, it's connotation. Sort of a "BRAVE HEART" name.

I am appeasing my wife and reading THe Total Money Makeover right now. Going to get out of debt, so on and so forth. No more credit card, pay off the vehicles and drive them til the wheels fall off, pay off the mortgage and be debt free. This book was a New York Slimes bestseller so my wife and I aren't the only ones who have read it.

I understand this episode has been pulled -- a nice follow-up to Book of Daniel being cancelled.

I actually heard some guy on ABC this morning -- an expert in Islamic relations -- explain that Mohammed is very sacred to the Muslims, almost like God. He said Jesus isn't seen that way in the Christian world.

I don't know what Christian world he sees, but in mine, Jesus IS God, and I take Him very seriously. I don't, however, threaten to firebomb anyone. When Christians were insulted by certain programming, we wrote television stations and sponsors expressing our disgust, and we prevailed. (Of course, we were accused of being narrow-minded censors -- probably by the same folks who are crying for the offended Muslims.)

I'm very disappointed in the American media's cowardice in this issue, but the double-standard is clear to anyone who will see it.
