And I meant to say-that was over 65 years ago...
well, perhaps under your definition of vitriolic partisanship, these past hearings didn't apply. But what you call angry screeching from the massachusetts contingent is what I would call vitriolic partisanship...because it was mean-spirited and based on nothing other than party affiliation. But maybe that's just the way I'm looking at it, I might be all alone on this one. Either way, it's fine. I think that they went well too, because Alito got in and he deserved it (as the article points out from the start)
I'd love to see the court declawed, because it is too powerful for us to be able to trust in the characters of individuals that sit up there. But since the chances of that are slim and none, for today I'll settle for getting conservatives up there who can take the fight to the leftover has-been communists that managed to worm their way on and have nearly wrecked this society.
I have a vague, vauge memory that one reason they did was because she was already old... hence she apparently isn't going to last too much longer.
haha fair enough. you're certainly entitled (and probably not alone in) to that view...
I too, in lieu of an ideal system, will take Justices who properly interpret the Constitution.
Most (not all) of the vitriol is being spoken by leftist Democrats, in my view. The left is terrified that the pinnacle of leftist humanism, the right to an abortion at any time and for any reason, might be threatened.
I think my point about the screeching was that it seemed to be largely (and properly) ignored when it came down to getting this fine jurist confirmed. They are the past... time for them to go onto the ash heap of history.
let's hope they go sooner rather than later
Please, somebody give me documented examples of any elected Republican official (Senate, House, RNC) using any of the rhetoric, accusations, slander, ethnic slurs, etc. that spews from the mouths of Kennedy, Kerry, Clinton(s), Durbin, Reid, Dean, Byrd, Gore, Edwards, Feinstein, Feingold, (fill in your Dim name here). The rancor is all from the left. I defy anyone to make a case that it is the Republican side that spews this crap.
I do think the supreme court should always tread softly in every decesion they make. I'm wondering what will happen in the next presidency, when atleast two more will retire...if not now.
How different would our government be under a generally conservative-leaning court?...We've been under a liberal-leaning court for some time, so it's really hard to know.
Yeah, we could get jaded on the process as it stands now. The sense of even decorum is fading fast. But I will state unequivocally it has been the Democrats giving a face to this since Bork, then ratcheting it up sonically with Thomas, and then going in to warp drive with Alito. A SC nominee for the first time had a fillibuster attempted against him. So even Obama came out and paradoxically got on his party for using procedural manuevers instead of winning elections AFTER he voted against cloture.
We just have to keep winning elections and letting the Dims eat their own so we can keep the Court.
what you say is true. If we keep winning, this is a moot point. Hopefully the American public will continue to see how bankrupt Democratic/liberal platforms are.
I agree that most of the vitriol is from the left. But it still hurts the whole country and potentially threatens our way of government. Not that they care, actually.
