Again, more "rumors", but I've heard that FN will still make the former Winchester rifles, either themselves in Belgium, or via licensed manufacturers in Japan.

Colt's Defense only went public last June. It's possible they have been bought, but there is nothing on their website to so indicate.

The two parts of Colt split into separate companies in 2002.

Nothing on the GD website about this either. Sounds like: Rumor, unconfirmed, likely false, to me.

I'm thinking--they bought the Colts' defense but not the offense? Has Peyton Manning's stock fallen that far that fast?

That's in the story .

However I doubt Herstal, which owns FN, Browning and US Repeating Arms will want to pay what Olin wants for the right to use the name. US Repeating Arms, has been the manufacturer of "Winchester" firearms since being spun out by Olin, who owns the Winchester name, and was later acquired by Herstal. From the story it sounds like many Winchesters (rifles and shotguns) have been made in FN and Browning plants for some time anyway.

There would not be any need for licensing, since the patents long ago expired, but they would have to change the brand from Winchester to something else, most probably Browning.

Of course Browning, Winchester and FN have a long history together. John Moses Browning did many of the designs that are produced by all three. Early on Browning sold his designs to Winchester, later some where sold or licensed to FN, and finally he established his own company to manufacture them others. He also sold some designs to Remington and even Colt.
