A sheriff is a county constitutional officer in his own right answerable only to the voters EXCEPT that Charlie Crist, a state constitutional officer, he has a Constitutional and statutory obligation to defend the rights of citizens and uphold the laws of the state.
Charlie is almost certainly holding back not wanting to anger county sheriffs (they, too, are politicians, first, not cops) and their thousands of deputies/employees across the state during an election cycle.
... [Tom] Gallagher should launch on Charlie for his failure to execute the duties of his office. The governor has known for a long time about guard violence against young people extending far beyond legally justified force to protect self and others and to maintain lawful order in the state prison and county jail system.
I have done stories on deadly violence against kids in our local jails and the political powers here could care less. Wide media play of that video of the boy being beaten created a political imperative for the governor to fire the head of the state prison system. The governor would not have acted otherwise.
In his affidavit, Cheshire wrote that he was called on March 1 by the Florida Department of Children & Families to provide an independent and objective medical review of allegations of possible abuse, neglect, or exploitation of Schiavo.
This is infuriating. The child was in state custody when he died at fourteen. Please see my posts above. Florida again! May Martin rest in peace.
Any thoughts on Marvin Anderson's medical examiner blaming sickle cell instead of the adult sheriff employees who pounced on him?
And DCF said everything was unfounded right on cue so that the two week torture of Terri could begin.
DCF's attorney McKibben is now a Pinellas County Judge appointed by Jeb Bush.

Right you are FV.
ORLANDO---Even though she and Central Florida's chief administrator with the Department of Families and Children (DCF) were under investigation for their handling of a matter involving the placement of a foster child in the home of an alleged child molester, Gov. Jeb Bush appointed DCF's general counsel Kelly McKibben to a judgeship in the Brevard County Circuit Court.
Oops, not Pinellas county.
Oooohhh.. how sad for the family. Glad to hear there will be an investigation.
Well, I'm chiming in quite late here, but I wanted to thank you for posting this article. Although I had heard of Haleigh's story right at the beginning, I did not know until I read this that she is conscious. I am stunned. God help us all.
May she recover, and may God protect her from any further evil at the hands of those who are duty-bound to protect her.

Sickle Cell disease does its damage by blocking tiny blood vessels. The cells are too large to pass through, so they block the passage of needed red blood cells. The blockage often causes pain episodes. It can damage internal organs, and often causes stroke, even in children, by clogging blood vessels to the brain.
I'm not a medic, but obviously, you don't want to beat up a patient with anemia. A beating would immediately make it worse from internal hemorrhaging and bruising. I should think it could easily be fatal.
Sean will doubtless correct his view when he thinks about it. The DSS is another matter. I felt right away that the prospect of sticking the stepfather with a murder rap was very much a factor in DSS thinking. At the same time, it would have buried the story and covered up their past failures to protect the child despite sixteen reports of her being abused. They're figuring if Haleigh dies, that whole ugly story of earlier abuse gets overshadowed and forgotten, and the DSS gets off scot free.
If the boy actually died during the beating, as this subhead states, any suggestion that Sickle Cell disease caused his death is false.
But the media is covering the books put out by Terri's family and by Mikey. First, from her family:
In 2004-5, when the Terri Schiavo case divided the country, one side of the story was buried under the avalanche of politics and power. Now, Terri Schiavos parents, brother, and sister speak outfor Terri and themselves. A LIFE THAT MATTERS may well change every assumption you have about Terris too-brief life and prolonged, agonizing death.
Terri Schiavo: A Life that Matters
And here is what the MSM reports:
In one corner, weighing in at 288 pages, is husband Michael Schiavo's "Terri: The Truth," written with Michael Hirsh, a documentary producer and military history author who got so angry at Florida Gov. Jeb Bush's intervention that he cold-called to offer his services.

In Asian cultures, life in all forms is highly regarded, and if one ends their life, their family is shunned. In most major religions, we see the same train of thought. In Taoism/Daoism, we see they believe in the pursuit of longevity of life, eternal life, and they believe death should neither be feared nor desired. Why then does our culture embrace death? In Buddhism, they place great significance on human life. Hindus believe harming oneself is bad "karma," and in Islam we see the Koran objects to taking one's life as well.

The boy's parents said the security tape raises questions about an autopsy that found that 14-year-old Martin Lee Anderson died from internal bleeding caused by a genetic blood disorder, and not from any injuries suffered in the Jan. 5 altercation.
