Imo, I believe Coulter's attempt at humor in this case --though ill-advised -- is rife with overreaction here considering her style and sense of humor.
One bad joke--which she immediatelly identified as ONLY a joke--and you cut someone loose? I'd be glad not to have you in a foxhole next to me.
That is her entire modus operendi - low blows and cheap shots. She doesn't know any other kind of debate.
Ann is often funny and spot on, she can be a delight to listen to. Not this time.
Ann and National Review were never a good match. They are both better off without the other.
Here is Goldberg's version of the Coulter-NR breakup:

I agree. She loves the attention and in all reality, 60% of the country does't know who she is.
Sounds to me like she was worried that someone in the media might take her up on her suggestion. You know how desperate some of those media types are to "scoop" the competition.
More great quotes from Ann:
"I think we had enough laws about the turn-of-the-century. We don't need any more." Asked how far back would she go to repeal laws, she replied, "Well, before the New Deal...[The Emancipation Proclamation] would be a good start."---Politically Incorrect 5/7/97
"I have to say I'm all for public flogging. One type of criminal that a public humiliation might work particularly well with are the juvenile delinquents, a lot of whom consider it a badge of honor to be sent to juvenile detention. And it might not be such a cool thing in the 'hood to be flogged publicly."---MSNBC 3/22/97
"Originally, I was the only female with long blonde hair. Now, they all have long blonde hair."---CapitolHillBlue.com 6/6/00
The swing voters---I like to refer to them as the idiot voters because they don't have set philosophical principles. You're either a liberal or you're a conservative if you have an IQ above a toaster. "---Beyond the News, Fox News Channel, 6/4/00
"My libertarian friends are probably getting a little upset now but I think that's because they never appreciate the benefits of local fascism."---MSNBC 2/8/97
"I think there should be a literacy test and a poll tax for people to vote."---Hannity & Colmes, 8/17/99
"I think [women] should be armed but should not [be allowed to] vote."---Politically Incorrect, 2/26/01
Thanks for appreciating the photos
Thats why we post them.
This one comment will do alot of damage to her now....
"Entire operandi??
Why don't you back up your OWN charge of a cheap shot and low blow at Ann Coulter?? What's more, I don't think YOU'RE actually a conservative, but counted amongst the "mushy-middle."
You obviously despise this patriot no matter what.
While over the years she's fought to score tremendous conservative points in her columns and appearances and books, been ganged up on during 'The View' and 'Politically Incorrect', appearances at universities, and been slandered herself....Only to be derided, defamed, and discarded at Free Republic for a joke that may have been inappropriate.
Shame on you folks.
MEMO TO FR: ANN COULTER IS NO DIPLOMATE.
I think she is funny and witty and completely over the top. We need somebody like her to keep the blood flowing.
Treason was a very interesting book. If you have not read it buy or borrow it. It will let you see Anne in a whole new light.
Amen...
The same people hammered Pat Robertson unmercifly recently.
On the mark 90% still leaves 10% for these people to b*tch and moan about.
I've read her columns. Saying that ad hominem attacks are her modus operendi is not a cheap shot. Truth is an absolute defense to slander.
What's more, I don't think YOU'RE actually a conservative, but counted amongst the "mushy-middle."
Smile when you say that. I am an independant - more interested in good arguments than the talking points of Republican pundit.
appearances at universities
Yeah. I watched one at my school. She was an embarassment. She kept getting off the topic at hand, and instead opted for cheap shots against Ted Kennedy, who was not especially relevant at the topic at hand.

I agree. She does indeed shake things up that NEED shaking up. So occasionally she steps on somebody's toes..
Yes. I've read all Ann's books. Entertaining and informative and stylish.
Ad hominems are relative to the traitors, liars, liberal scum she's referring to -- especially that fat no good murderous anti-America b@stard, Ted Kennedy.
"I am an independant - more interested in good arguments than the talking points of Republican pundit."
Surprise, surprise -- someone with their OWN modus operandi hiding behind the facade of "independent."
Liberals, while they may be wrong, are not automatically "traitors," "liars," or "scum." Some may be lying, some may be naive, and some may be right.

Lets see. Americans are fat as a nation. So how is that a relevant insult to Ted Kennedy? He's "no-good"? The People of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts disagree with you. "Murdering"? At worst, he was negligent - there is no evidence of intent in the Chappaquidick tragedy.

I have no agenda, except the truth. Never have.
In other words, even a broken clock tells the right time twice a day.

Btw, how's the clam bar over at DU?
