What's the difference between an American nuke and a Mexican nuke?

An American nuke would be delivered from a B2 bomber.

A Mexican nuke would be delivered by two hundred guys in a pickup truck.

My desire to protect Germany has waned since Germany has so actively undermined us in our efforts to protect ourselves.

Much the same way France has.

If Germany would step up to the plate and actually help with blood and treasure proportionate with your country's wealth that opinion would change.

Germany should be no more allowed to have nukes than Iran. They have conclusively demonstrated in so many ways that Germany simply cannot be trusted with that kind of power.

I don't recall one of the goals of Mexico's government being, "Create a woldwide Latin caliphate." Creation of a worldwide Islamic caliphate, however, is one of the goals of the Iranian government.

While Der Alte may well have wanted a nuclear-armed Bundeswehr in the 1950s, German posession of nuclear weapons would not have been acceptable to any of the Allied Powers then. If you will recall, when the multilateral nuclear force (MLF) was proposed in the early 1960s, which would have included German participation, the howls from England and France, and even some quarters in the US, were so great that the plan was scrapped. Tom Lehrer, the US comedy song writer for the show "That Was the Week that Was" wrote a rather funny song about the controversy, "MLF Lullaby":

Sleep, baby, sleep, in peace may you slumber
No danger lurks, your sleep to encumber
We've got the missiles, peace to determine
And one of the fingers on the button will be German

Why shouldn't they have nuclear warheads
England says no, but they are all soreheads
I say a bygone should be a bygone
Let's make peace the way we did in Stanleyville and Saigon

Once all the Germans were warlike and mean
But that couldn't happen again
We taught them a lesson in nineteen eighteen
And they've hardly bothered us since then

So sleep well, my darling, the sandman can linger
We know our buddies won't give us the finger
Heil - hail - the Wehrmacht, I mean the Bundeswehr
Hail to our loyal ally
MLF will scare Brezhnev
I hope he is half as scared as I!

I confess that as much as I have long considered myself a Germanophile, I remain fundamentally uncomfortable with the notion of Germany having nuclear weapons. There is something in the German soul that encourages people to extremes of one form or another: I see the radical pacificism, the leftist revolutionism, and facism are all of a piece pyschologically.

Well, IMHO, if the west allows Iran to get the bomb, that will automatically lead to Germany, maybe even Italy or Spain building up a nuclear deterrent of their own. The reason for that is the same why it makes sense to allow Israel to have the bomb: Because they are pretty darn close to those terror states. You can witness the same line of thought in Japan with regard to North Korea.

I really think that there is a shift in public opinion here in Europe. Adolfinejad pretty much proved to Europe that Bush was 100% right with his "axis of evil". And now Europe is coming to its senses and the first result of this is naturally discussing how to best defend oneself.

Do I think Germany should get the bomb? No. I think the west should take out the Iranian nuclear sites first and I wouldn't mind getting rid of Adolfinejad at the same time. It would have to be a resounding signal: "The west is united and you better not try and f*ck with us!", much like during the cold war.

If the western nations should fail to deliver such a signal, I think the German bomb, just like the Japanese bomb is not only justified, but inevitable.

in reality, how many steps does germany have to take to assemble a nuke? I would assume it is days for them, if not a few weeks.

We call that treaty the "2+4"-treaty (German Dem. Rep., Fed. Rep. of Ger. + France, UK, USA, SU). And I don´t see a loophole here. The treaty gives Germany its full sovereignty back, so why shouldn´t we be able to change the treaty by a notification and the consent of the 4 former occupation powers? We´re definitely not going to get nukes without the consent of our most important allies... for now. :)

We simply don´t need to, right now. I´m confident that we get that security guarantee from our allies (= the US). If not, well, then we would have to develop nukes - and that´s exactly what Mr. Scholz proposes.

"So you basically say, that if then-Chancellor Konrad Adenauer (voted to by the greatest German last year)"

Voted by whom? People age 70 and above? People who were not born when he ruled?

"yap - and your country is getting a hispanic nation - should we allow mexicans to have nukes ? "

I don't agree with the 'no nukes for germany due to its very high muslim immigration levels' argument, but anyone suggesting latin american immigration has similar social implications to muslim immigration just isn't thinking right.

So you don´t trust us? Is that what you say??? We´re no more or less dangerous than the French or Swedes, or the British. I wouldn´t sleep unwell if the Poles, the Italians or the Swiss would have nukes. For me, it´s simply trust in the stability of their democratic governments. And we´re definitely not at risk of becoming a dictatorship, or are we? HEIL KANZLERIN MERKEL, HEIL!!! ;-)

yeah more than anything the nuclear comments from france and now an ex-german official reflect the growing realization that iran is going nuclear.

Have you ever voted for Washington or Lincoln to be the greatest President?

More than half a million have participated in the phone poll in the frame of a nation-wide TV show.

"And we´re definitely not at risk of becoming a dictatorship, or are we?"

I think any western demoracy is just ONE major economic depression away from starting down that path, with the first step being election of the wrong sort of person to any position they can then climb to power from.

"Have you ever voted for Washington or Lincoln to be the greatest President? "

No and I think those polls are moronic. What about Adams or Madison or Monroe? Most people voting in those polls couldn't even tell you what signifigant job washington had before becoming president. I bet you some couldnt' tell you which side Lincoln was president of becaue they don;t know what the 2 sides in the civil war were, just that he freed slaves. What kind of vote is that? Abysmal ignorance is not the most reassuring quality in one's supporters.

If americans had to vote on Truman or Eisenhower as best president of the 50's, they would be clueless, at least those not alive then.

Might as well have people vote on which planet in our solar system is the most important.
