Voter's should be demanding this from their upcoming candidates. I mean I read so much frustration on FR about this, I would think some would spill over and folks would be getting tired of justice dragging out.
I suppose, if you do not see it, well it just is not up there with other issues but it is broken at least in California and needs to be fixed.
For the victims.
PING
Please put me on any pro-death penalty ping list you have. Thanks.
Hang em fast.........Hang em high ~ Bump!
As a person who lost a brother to a serial killer, I would personally volunteer to pull the trigger, flip the switch, drop the gas pellets or inject cyanide into any convicted killer.
Agreed
And if the stupid libs want to keep it the way it is, then I don't care if a convicted felon turns 100 and goes blind, deaf, and quadriplegic waiting on death row.
Too old to be executed. Give me a break.
Why? For health reasons?
;)
It seems pretty obvious that he wasn't too old to die afterall. Imagine that.
Saying he was too old to die is like saying someone is too fat to diet.
You can't kill me, I'm too YOUNG to die!
You can't kill me, I'm too YOUNG to die!
You can't kill me, I'm too YOUNG to die!
You can't kill me, I'm too YOUNG to die!
Well, you sure can't kill me know, I'm TOO OLD!
I would be interested in hearing from a FReeper in the know about why it takes so long. If I had to guess, I would say there are not enough judges, so the appeals incur long delays waiting for a judge to become available.
Whatever the cause, it is worthy of review by our legislature to begin fixing the problem. Let's start by taking measures which cut the time in half, say only 10 years!
"Saying he was too old to die is like saying someone is too fat to diet."
Michael Moore suddenly came to mind.
How we got from "Hang 'em at sunrise" to this, I don't know. No wonder it's not an effective deterrent.
First of all, there's no such thing as "mandatory" capital punishment. Capital crimes are always bifurcated into a "guilt" phase, wherein it's decided whether the accused actually did the deed, and the "penalty" phase, where they decide the penalty.
Second, above and beyond all other appeals allowed, there is a mandatory appeal to the State supreme court.
Third, there are loads and loads of appeals. An appellate court can grant them as long as an issue triable on appeal is raised, and they usually will grant the appeals, simply because of how serious capital punishment is. And if it looks like the defense might be on to something, they'll push the execution back a few years.
There is another fun little factor, though: suicide. The suicide rate for death row inmates is about ten times the national average, and six times the rate of the general prison population.
Yep. That's the solution all right. Put a time requirement on them.
Give me a second...I'll die on my own...I don't need your help
Happy birthday, Clarence Allen!
Here's Allen's 76th birthday photo, taken a few hours before he finally met justice. Pictured behind him is his son Roger... who was in on the original burglary that started all the trouble.
They had recruited Roger's girlfriend, but unfortunately she spilled the beans -- so she had to be "dealt with." Cyanide didn't work, so Allen had her strangled. That resulted in the original life sentence. So then he had 3 more people killed because they had testified against him, and he wanted them out of the way for the appeals phase.
Also pictured is Roger's um... current wife.
The kid in front with his arm around Allen is a great-nephew.
