It is only with the greatest trepidation that I post anything serious into this slugfest

I always appreciate new historical lessons. Thanks

Wouldn't it be cool if you had posted that on any thread anywhere on the forum?

Instead of taking up valuable article space?

America is running out of font. DO YOUR PART TO CONSERVE FONT!

If the 4th Amendment can be ignored...then so can the 2nd. Are you ready to give up your gun?

This is something that few liberals can grasp but I will attempt an explanation.

There have been times in America's history where a slight "bending" of the citizen's rights has indeed occurred. The bending is limited and made straight again once the crisis is under control.

I do not in anyway subscribe to the notion that having nothing to hide means you will have nothing to fear. This misguided notion usually occurs at a time when the persons voicing that position are in harmony with their government. The concern over citizen's rights are not for those times, they are there for the times when you are not in harmony with government. This requires constant attention to discover if that “bending” extends further than is necessary or is abused in anyway. A very difficult, but very necessary, task to be sure.

Americans who do not understand the reason and necessity of the second amendment are usually the Americans who are unable to understand how this "bending" can be tolerated.

In order to understand the second amendment better, or any rights in the Bill of Rights for that matter, one must first recognize that these rights ARE NOT GRANTED by the Bill of Rights. The Bill of Rights PROTECTS rights deemed to be inherent and existent prior to the ratification of the Constitution from interference by the newly established government.

These same people are often be puzzled by the strength of conviction displayed by other Americans when the second amendment is assaulted as out of date and unnecessary. The protected right of the citizens provided by the second amendment gives comfort should the government ever become tyrannical or oppressive and the citizen is no longer in harmony with their government.

My country right or wrong, when right to be kept right and when wrong to be made right.

I know this simple concept will not be understood by some nor agreed with by others, but it remains effective as long as the second amendment is not altered.
