Do you happen to have a source on Swann's "pro-life" position?
Thanks!

Great point. Swann could actually help Rick with coattails if Rick plays it smart.

I'm sorry, I must be getting a different web page than you. Nowhere on the Swann website does he articulate any of the things you suggest. In fact, there isn't one specific proposal or program on the entire website. The man has been mulling this run for a year now. Hasn't he figured out what he believes in yet?

It's going to take a bit more than name recognition to put even a slight dent in Rendell's advantage in Pittsburg and Philly. I can understand that after Mike Fisher (I've seen corpses with more personality), anyone would look more appealing, but one would hope we could someone with an actual program to run. Mr. Swann's stirring plan for Pennsylvania consists of nothing more than non-specific platitudes:

Creating Economic Opportunities

The greatest challenge of the next Governor is to put Pennsylvania’s economy back on track.

Preparing Our Children to Compete

“The most basic job of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania is to provide an education that will lead to opportunity for our children."

Pennsylvania Values

Pennsylvania values have always been about hard work, determination, and the will to succeed.

No substance and not all that much style.

He supposed to have put something on his website that sounds
pro-life. He's also supposed to backed by "moderate" Tom Ridge. Swann talked over most of the GOP State Committee
people in Lancaster County (who are pro-life) into supporting him.

I heard Swann's interview with Hannity last week in which he stated he was pro-life.

Under Pennsylvania Values on the site it states:

"Lynn Swann believes that the Commonwealth has an obligation to protect its citizens, and that includes the most innocent among us, the unborn.

As Governor, Lynn Swann would support extending protections to the unborn. If the Supreme Court overturns Roe. Vs. Wade, Lynn Swann would sign a bill the legislature sends him extending additional protections to the unborn.

Until that time, Lynn Swann will continue attempting to create a culture of life, both by using legislation as well as using the bully pulpit of the office. He will work to reduce the numbers of abortions by encouraging alternatives, including adoption and abstinence."

Interesting that it appears there are 3 up and coming statewide candidates from important states who are all conservative and who I could get behind quite easily for POTUS, though 08 is a bit too early: Blackwell, Steele, and Swann. Interesting that they are all African American. Sure there are a few bright spots elsewhere, but these guys seem to me to have the star material we need, ie, the Reagan factor.

Sad to say but Rick will be looking for other work Dec2006.
Maybe lobbyist or lawyer for ACLU.

And he has his buddy Arlen to thank for that.

One of the primary issues should be Rendell's support (and later flip flop) on the PA Congressional pay raise. That angered PA voters so much, they voted out the judge (whom Rendell initially supported) who authorized the legality of the pay raise -- that almost never happens.

A fourth up-and-coming conservative from an important state, U.S. Senate candidate Keith Butler from Southfield, Michigan, has been getting the shaft from the National Republican Senatorial Committee. If conservatives rally behind him, he could be a fourth black conservative Republican elected to the Senate or Governorship in 2006. http://www.keithabutler.com/

Sure Lancey! First,See posts #25 & 27.

What convinced me about Swannie's sincerity on the pro-life question was a statement he made to reporters at a Westmoreland County GOP Dinner in Feb. 2005.

He told them flat out he was opposed to abortion rights. He then said: "My father only wanted two children. My mother wanted a third.I wasn't supposed to be born, but here I am.That's enough for me to be pro-life".

I'm adopted, Lancey, so his statement resonates with me.It's not a political calculation he's making, his sincerity comes from his life experience.I understand that, and I find it refreshing in a man who, hopefully, will be our next governor.

There's a reference to the statement at the link below. It's a long read, but if you scroll almost to the bottom, you should run across it.

Swann

One indication that Swannie is important to Republicans in PA, a swing state, is that the MSM has all but ignored his candidacy announcement. And it goes without saying that no major "journalists" are knocking down his door for TV or radio interviews (Chris Matthews hardly qualifies). If Swannie were running as a Dem, there would have been all kinds of "human interest" stories - months before he announced and then again when he announced.

I agree, black conservatives terrify the left, and that includes the old media.

The only real bigotry existing to any significant degree in America today can be found almost exclusively in the Democrat Party and their mouthpieces in the media.

You're right on the mark. I think the Reps are at a real tipping point regarding black candidates, appointees and real role models (eg. Condi). And leading Dems are quite aware of it. This is why they go ballistic whenever they can on any prominent black Republican (eg. the lieutenant governor in MD). My switch from Dem to Rep came decisively with the Thomas hearings, and I've never looked back. The Alito hearing preliminaries are only reconfirming Dems' worst traits and inclinations - and they can't help themselves. With no program, you go for personal attacks (led, of course, by Teddy!) and don't notice the contradiction staring you in the face. And at times these personal attacks are indeed blatantly racist or ethnocentric, and again they can't help themselves.

While I'm at it, consider the following double standard: What would MSM coverage look like if a right-wing group physically disrupted a left-wing anti-Alito press conference? No one in the media even takes notice of the double-standard; it is simply given that left-goofies can do whatever they want.

I don't know if you've ever read Slander by Ann Coulter, but the book is a modern history of exactly what you're describing.

I'm not always impressed by Coulter, but that book I would highly recommend.
