From "What if" No. 2 -- The TIMES has learned additional details of a facility being used for the project in Los Alamos. Its remote location made it the top choice for a research and development site. The owners of a school on the property were willing to sell it to the military for $440,000, since they were having problems obtaining and keeping qualified teachers during the war.
