Duke and Northwestern Share 2005 AFCA Academic Achievement Award

"WACO, TEX. — Duke University and Northwestern University will receive the American Football Coaches Association’s 2005 Academic Achievement Award, which is presented annually by the Touchdown Club of Memphis. The schools each recorded a 100 percent graduation rate when all members of their freshman classes of 1999-2000 earned a degree."
...

"Twenty-three other institutions will be recognized for graduating 70 percent or more of their football student-athletes. Four of those institutions achieved a rate of 90 percent or better: Boston College, Miami (Ohio), Notre Dame and Vanderbilt. The others receiving honorable mention are: Ball State, Colorado, Connecticut, East Carolina, Hawaii, Iowa, Kent State, Mississippi, Nebraska, North Carolina, Northern Illinois, Ohio, Penn State, SMU, Southern Mississippi, Texas Tech, Tulane, Wake Forest and Western Michigan." Texas Tech over 70%...right on. Also Nebraska and Colorado among Big XII schools. Nice job.

No Pac 10 schools over 70%?...Hmmmmm.

"There are also spaces for minority candidates who also need a little help in some aspect of their academic readiness for the taxing and fast paced academics of the academy."

Sounds like racial discrimination.

Notice how in the Bowl Disqualification category he starts using the words AND/OR. So the overall rate of graduation could be 85% but if the racial gap is more then 15% they're disqualified. At least that's how I read this

Touchdown
Teams with at least a 50 percent overall graduation success rate, at least a 50 percent black graduation rate, and racial gaps of less than 15 percentage points.

First Down
Teams with overall and black graduation rates of at least 50 percent, but racial gaps of 15 percentage points or more.

Bowl Disqualification
Teams with overall and/or black graduation rates under 50 percent and/or racial gaps of 15 percentage points or more:

NAPS doesn't play interschool sports to a meaningful degree. it's basically a year of boosting skill and maturation for a kid, otherwise a good candidate for appointment, but just not quite ready. Sorry, nice try.

NAPS class of 1987 here.

We had enough future USNA varsity athletes to field full football and lacrosse teams. And we played a full schedule in both sports.

If that ever occurred in the history of NAPS almost 20 yeasr ago, that certainly not the case today nor has it been in the 12 years that I've been involved in the admissions process.
