Americans pretty much can and do "all get along" in families, neighborhoods, and the anonymous public sphere -- whatever their politics -- but expecting agreement about controversial issues on top of that is demanding too much.

You're already mischaracterizing the situation. You're implying that those who disagree with you are the ones who want the law changed. In fact, it's those on your side who are trying to change the law. This is a constant pattern I see among those pushing for same-sex "marriage". They simply can not frame the issue honestly.

On top of which, there's no "outlawing" going on. Outlawing implies a penalty. What's happening is that official recognition is not being bestowed on such unions. That's because the benefit to society from such recognition has not been demonstrated.

But the most pertinent point in this debate, however, is this: It is not discrimination when some people find the law better suited to their proclivities than others do, as long as the law itself applies equally to all. Are you not able to see any difference at all between that, and laws that actually do discriminate (that is, operate differentially) on the basis of some factor?
